VMware acquires Trango

MUNICH — Hidden in a press release is the unannounced acquisition by VMware Inc. (Palo Alto, Calif.), provider of virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, of Trango Virtual Processors, French provider of embedded processor virtualization IP, last month.

VMware indeed announced it has brought virtualization to mobile phones via its new VMware Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP), which is built on a technology it acquired from Trango Virtual Processors in October 2008.

In a separate note, Trango's communication manager confirmed to EETimes Europe that Trango's acquisition by VMware is now effective. No more details could be obtained at this point of time.

Headquartered in Grenoble, France, Trango Virtual Processors changed its trading name from Trango Systems in May 2007.

VMware said its MVP is a thin layer of software that will be embedded on a mobile phone that decouples the applications and data from the underlying hardware. It will be optimized to run on low-power-consuming and memory-constrained mobile phones.

The MVP is expected to enable handset vendors to bring phones to market faster and make them easier to manage, claimed VMware.
