Embedly ❤ Medium

Today we announced that Embedly has been acquired by Medium.

We are obviously excited: Medium is the leading platform for publishers and the team behind the product is stellar. I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a clear picture of what to expect from us going forward.

First off, the Embedly you know and love is staying as is. In simple terms, Embedly will continue to focus on creating the best platform for embedding. The Embedly team will be helping to make embedded media faster, lighter and more robust across platforms. And we are stoked to work on the Medium platform itself. There are many ways to tell stories, and we want to make Medium an even more inviting place for all creators. We are currently thinking about how to make video and audio feel more native to Medium.

Embedding on the web is a mess. Developers lack strong standards and end up reinventing the wheel with every new embed. At Embedly, we started off trying to standardize embedding across providers and in our next act with Medium, we hope to lead the discussion on creating better standards and tools for everyone. Medium is making a number of commitments to improve the product and is providing Embedly with additional resources to do so.

The last 6 years at Embedly have been an amazing journey. We are thrilled for the next chapter and will be here for years to come. (In fact, we’ll be literally here, too: we will be keeping our office in Boston).
