Announced completely by surprise at the January 21, 2015, Windows 10: The next chapter event, HoloLens is Microsoft's head-worn Windows 10 computing device. Running a 'holographic' version of Windows 10, the HoloLens will immerse you in your personal computing environment — be that playing Minecraft, making a Skype call, even walking on Mars, all and more are possible with the HoloLens. It was developed "hiding in plain sight" on Microsoft's main campus in Redmond, and yet managed to avoid leaking out ahead of time.

It's completely wireless, has spatial sound and a see-through lens so that you can still see the real world in front of you, but with the holograms laid atop it.

The $3,000 HoloLens Development Kit is available now for preorder, with orders in the U.S. and Canada to ship on March 30th. Developers in the U.S. and Canada who want to get a hold of HoloLens can apply direct from Microsoft, providing they meet the following criteria:

  • You are a developer in the United States (including Puerto Rico) or Canada where the Development Edition will first be available.
  • You are a Windows Insider. By participating in the Windows Insider program, you agree to provide feedback and work with us to define the future of holographic computing.
