Building a Kingdom from the comfort of your high horse

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Kingdom is a fresh take on the management genre, with touches of exploration and tower defense layered on. With a detailed pixel art style and a great deal of depth under the hood, it's an impressive effort from the two-person team at Noio and Licorice. David Martinez from publisher Raw Fury recently sat down with us to show us the game, building the swankiest possible settlement, using our queen to recruit villagers and fending off the creatures that go bump in the night. Kingdom will launch on Steam for Windows PC, Mac and Linux this fall.

Destiny's new treasure chests can be reopened infinitely, if you're fast enough

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Destiny: The Taken King's new public area, the Dreadnaught, has a familiar quirk about it: You can re-open treasure chests found there repeatedly, if you can move quick enough. After opening a treasure chest, if you can load a new part of the area before the chest de-spawns, you can come back to the chest to find it instantly refilled. If you're having a hard time finding Hadium Flakes — a new resource you'll need to make one of Destiny: The Taken King's new swords — or Runes with which to activate the Court of Oryx event, this is a stellar way to find them. If you get a lucky spawn, you'll also end up with a metric ton of Glimmer, some Motes of Light, some Strange Coins and even a Legendary Engram or two. Check out the video guide...

The Halo 5 tech that scales resolution to ensure 60fps and 'large-scale destruction'

Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries is prioritizing framerate over resolution to ensure that the first-person shooter is always running at 60fps — but not necessarily at 1080p — according to a Halo Waypoint post this week from three of the game's creators. In short, to keep Halo 5 running at 60fps amid the chaos of alien warfare, 343 will periodically decrease its resolution beneath the maximum 1080p. Must Read Q&A;: Reinventing Halo - The multiplayer future of Halo 5 "Framerate is king for us on Halo 5," studio head Josh Holmes writes, explaining that Halo 5's game engine uses a "new progressive resolution system that allows us to dynamically scale the resolution at which we render the game (up to 1080p) based on the needs of the scene. This enables us to deploy...

They can also change shape and size to larger and more stylized versions of themselves, which comes in handy for fighting others. World of Final Fantasy will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2016.

Danganronpa 3 coming to PlayStation 4, PS Vita

Earlier this year, Spike Chunsoft developers told Polygon they were working on Danganronpa 3, but that nothing was yet set in stone for the upcoming title. Today that changed with the studio announcing that the game is coming to PlayStation Vita and PS4 and showing off a new trailer. You can watch the trailer in the video above. If the trailer doesn't play, make sure the video skipped to the 1:26:40 mark. In the original Danganronpa and its sequel, players take on the role of a high school student trapped, first in a school and then on an island. To escape, the characters have to get away with murder. You can read more about the series and how it was developed in our interview with writer Kazutaka Kodaka.

Forget jumpscares, this horror game gets under your skin

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube How do you create a successful horror game without relying on jump scares, tons of gore, or most of the usual tropes associated with the genre? You make a world that is decidedly off kilter, confusing and strangely awful. That's what Ape Law did with Albino Lullaby, and it worked. Watch us play through the game's early sequences, twisting through its puzzle box environments, encountering freaky messages and finding out the truth about its queasy characters. Super Mario Maker is coming to Super Smash Bros. in a new stage

Nintendo will release a new stage based on Super Mario Maker for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, the company announced today. The Super Mario Maker stage comes with a pretty neat trick: dynamically built stages based on four Mario games. Like Super Mario Maker, the new stage for Super Smash Bros. will draw upon elements from the original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. According to a video released by Nintendo today, the levels will be quickly constructed at the beginning of a match. The hand that pieces the level together will even fix portions of the stage that are broken by players. The Super Mario Maker stage for Super Smash Bros. hits Wii U and 3DS on Sept. 30.

Watch a Doom designer's take on Super Mario Maker

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube Tom Hall is already a game design legend, after co-founding id Software and Ion Storm and helping create Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Now, he's brought his talents to the significantly less gory world of Super Mario Maker with a level called "FIND 15 1UPs EPIC MANSION." In addition to the titular hidden power-ups, the tricky level also has three alternate endings (OK, they're just different paths to the flag, but still, technically accurate). After more than a few tries, we couldn't quite find all 15 and escape with our lives, as you can see in the video above. If you'd like to try your hand, the Course ID is 68B9-000-0036-A704.
