Destiny: The Taken King patch removes exotic engram trick

Bungie updated Destiny: The Taken King yesterday with a new patch that eliminates a recently discovered exploit that allowed players to quickly and easily amass a large number of powerful weapons and armor pieces. Patch notes for "hot fix" version 2.0.0.4 highlight a handful of updates to the game, but the most notable is the one related to Xur. Three of Coins, one of the items sold by the weekend salesperson, "now provides a smaller increase in exotic engram drop chance when rapidly killing ultras," the developer explains. Must Read How to get Destiny: The Taken King's best gear in the least time, guaranteed This will come as a disappointment to those players taking advantage of a trick that involved using the Three of Coins to collect these rare items. Here's what's worth buying from Destiny's Xur, Sept. 25-27

Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube If you're playing Destiny, you're probably familiar with Xur, the weekly exotic-item merchant who arrives in the tower on Friday at 5 a.m. ET and departs on Sunday at 5 a.m. ET. If you're a casual player, it can be hard to know where your hard-earned Strange Coins are best spent. Watch the above video for a quick review of Xur's inventory this week. Xur is in just inside the Tower hangar this weekend. The weekly heroic strike is gone, so there is no longer a guaranteed consistent source of coins, but coins are now much more common from strikes and Crucible matches. Level 28 Prison of Elders is also still a fairly reliable source of coins. Xur's Inventory for the weekend includes: Legacy Weapon Engram: Primary Weapon Ruin Wings S...

Take a good, long look at NBA 2K16 in its biggest trailer yet

2K Sports has made something of an annual event out of its "Momentous" trailers for the NBA 2K series, which typically arrive shortly before launch, and the one for NBA 2K16 doesn't disappoint. The trailer, which contains about two and a half minutes of in-game footage, shows off players throwing down thunderous dunks, crashing to the floor, faking out opponents, draining jump shots and getting very, very pumped up about all of it. Seriously, check out Joakim Noah's bulging neck tendons. NBA 2K16 will be released Sept. 29 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Pre-order customers can start playing tomorrow, four days early. For more on NBA 2K16, check out a trailer for the game's upgraded studio show below.

Call of Duty's new eSports league will have $3 million and amateurs in 2016

Activision is creating a new Call of Duty eSports league in 2016 that will bring a $3 million prize pool and provide amateurs a path to next fall's Championship. A press release from publisher Activision explains the structure of the upcoming Call of Duty World League. Competitors participate in one of two divisions, the Pro and the Challenge Division, which will take them to the Call of Duty Championship. These separate branches of the World League are meant to accommodate both seasoned competitive Call of Duty players and those who are just starting out. Professional teams from across the Western hemisphere can participate in Pro Division matches throughout the year, beginning this coming January, in the hopes of making it to the final championship round. Persona 5 reveals key difference from predecessors as new details emerge

The latest issue of Famitsu has new story and characters details, as well as screens, for Persona fans on the series' next installment. According to the magazine, the story from Persona 5 will differ from the last two mainline games. Instead of facing off against a central enemy, the Phantom Thieves that make up the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 game's cast will take on different opponents. This is due to its "omnibus story," the article mentions. The article adds that a theme of that story is "social reform." The protagonist and his team aim to make antagonists confess their crimes and regain stolen hearts. These villains reside in a mysterious place called the Palace. A smartphone app system is in place to help the characters keep in contact and locate their enemies. Personas...

Here's how to grab the exotic Black Spindle sniper rifle in Destiny today

There's a hidden area in one of Destiny: The Taken King's new quests that will put you and your fireteam up against one of the stiffest challenges the game has to offer — but it's not without its rewards. Specifically, the Black Spindle, an exotic sniper rifle that mirrors the popular, insta-reloading Black Hammer from The Dark Below DLC. You can watch the video above to see where to go to get the Black Spindle today, but be forewarned: You're going to have to take out a lot of really challenging enemies in not a lot of time. Run today's Daily Heroic Story, Lost to Light. Bring a full fireteam, preferably with everyone over Light Level 290. Update: The Black Spindle won't show up unless Lost to Light is being run as the Daily Heroic, so either knock this out today or wait for it to...

Mega Man Legends is heading to the PlayStation Store

Mega Man Legends will be available on the American PlayStation Store next week, despite Capcom's previous claims that such a release would be impossible. The classic PlayStation game will launch a week from today, Sept. 29. It will be priced at $9.99 and can be downloaded on the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita. Capcom's Greg Moore, aka "Gregaman," shared the news in a post to his blog on the Capcom Unity site. Moore writes that this re-release has been long-requested by fans, including himself. He also reminds readers that the "complexities" of getting the game released digitally have been documented on the Ask Capcom blog in the past. This is most notable in a Q&A; from 2011 with Capcom USA's vice president, Christian Svensson. When asked whether Mega Man Legends would be making...

How to get Destiny: The Taken King's best gear in the least time, guaranteed

Get better gear, faster When you hit level 40 in Destiny: The Taken King — which only takes minutes if you plan for it — and complete the Taken King campaign, the game presents you with an array of choices that may seem bewildering to new or returning casual players. It doesn't help that Destiny now rewards you in different ways. The Light system, which is the central measure of progression past the level cap, has been completely overhauled, and the way it operates isn't particularly intuitive. The game also offers you a lot of things to do at the level cap: You can explore the new Dreadnaught patrol area, you can proceed into strikes or you can follow the quest chains the NPCs in the Tower offer you. But it may not be clear what your goal is once you reach max level, or how these...

EA Sports FIFA 16 review: golden goal

Like the best professionals, FIFA 16 responds to an unexpected challenge with disciplined play driven by the knowledge of what it takes to win. Having slammed the door on its competition for much of the preceding console generation, EA Sports' FIFA was blindsided last year by the soccer video game equivalent of an equalizer goal. Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 delivered stronger gameplay than FIFA 15, a withering success against a franchise that prides itself on technical brilliance. To carry the sports metaphor further, all eyes fall on the betting favorite after such a startling blow, especially when a fickle crowd turns and cheers the underdog. After PES 2015 arrived, players of both games wondered if the big goals routinely scored in FIFA 15 were truly earned. FIFA 16 responds with...

Life is Strange's fifth and final episode coming next month

The fifth and final episode of Life is Strange, "Polarized," will launch on Oct. 20, developer Dontnod announced this morning. The news comes from a post on publisher Square Enix's official European blog. Luc Baghadoust, producer of the game, wrote that despite it not yet being "100% ready ... in the spirit of [protagonist] Max's birthday (today)" the developer wanted to share the news. Baghadoust adds that "many things can change in the lead up to release but the team are working really hard to try and hit this date." The first episode of the game premiered back in January and has been following a bimonthly release schedule ever since. Baghadoust alludes to this deviation in the announcement, writing that, "We know the wait may be a bit longer than some of you were hoping for but we...

A crackdown on women's soccer and video games reveals the NCAA's true nature

This week delivered a concrete example of what American college sports is all about: Control, over every aspect of the life of any player on any team at any of our universities. When the NCAA is digging in its heels on women's soccer, which its member universities all blandly classify as a "non-revenue sport" you know the organization's modern purpose is more about control than it is the money. With career bureaucrats, it usually is. On Thursday, Electronic Arts acknowledged that 13 members of three national teams — Mexico's, Spain's and Canada's — had to be wiped from its upcoming FIFA 16 at the last minute. That's because the NCAA, which doesn't have a goddamn thing to do with this video game, said these players' appearance — legally secured with permission from their nation's soccer...

Press Start: Tokyo Game Show, Hearthstone skullduggery and, oh yeah, Destiny

For the 0.2 percent of you who didn't know, The Taken King launched last week, and for the 0.2 percent of those who don't know what it is, it's not a tribute to Liam Neeson. It more or less remakes the most popular current console game. As such the week was jampacked with Destiny news but a few other subjects did manage to squirt through — like Tokyo Game Show, where Sony had plenty to say after skipping a Gamescom keynote. Nintendo also named a new president to lead the company after Satoru Iwata's very untimely passing, though the real news may be in the leadership reorganization that goes along with the appointment. And Shenmue 3 must have gotten nostalgic for E3 2015 — was it really three months ago? — as it reopened a new crowdfunding campaign. They must really need to hit that...

Skylanders: Superchargers review: wheels up

Even a teenager isn't immune to the charms of Skylanders: Superchargers' toys. Going on four years now, Skylanders continues to improve and impress and not just in its eclectic design of wondrous toys, the video game too seems in a race with itself to always outdo its predecessor. This year, developer Vicarious Visions delivers a vehicle-themed sequel that brings with it a seismic shift in the way you play the game's main campaign and a host of additions meant to extend the life of the title well past completion. Cooperative online and local play, Mario-Kart-esque racing, an improved version of Skylander's in-game card game, daily adventure challenges and more help to soften the blow of the game's high price of entry. Most importantly though, all of that content, all of the care...

Call of Duty's latest trailer is 10 minutes — of reading

The chronology of events leading up to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 spans more than 112 years. That makes the 10 minutes it takes to watch this video recapping it seem like a bargain, no? Seriously, gang, this is 10 minutes of reading text. That is what you are signing up for. It's significant that this was published on developing studio Treyarch's YouTube account and not Call of Duty's, because 10 minutes of reading comports with no known effective advertising strategy in the Western world. Anyway, here's the briefing to get you ready for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, launching Nov. 6 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For more, see our preview video from a month ago below.

Four very popular Divas won't make WWE 2K16's roster — even as DLC

Four performers anchoring the WWE's "Divas Revolution" of this summer will not appear in WWE 2K16 when it launches, 2K Sports announced yesterday. They won't even make the game as DLC later. 2K Sports made the announcement after releasing its final, on-the-disc roster for WWE 2K16, which launches Oct. 27 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Fans immediately noticed that Sasha Banks (pictured above), Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Bayley were not included, prompting the statement. In a statement, 2K Sports said its attempts to include the divas "simply did not work out for various reasons." It then definitively shut off the possibility of them joining the roster later. 2K Sports noted that the 13 Divas that are available on the disc's main roster are the most ever for a...

Destiny review update 1: Destiny 2.0

Prior to the launch of The Taken King expansion (which Polygon will be reviewing as a separate product), Bungie released a major patch for Destiny restructuring the game into what it has labeled "Destiny 2.0." We spent the last two weeks starting a character from scratch to experience how the game plays in its new form. The biggest changes in Destiny 2.0 come from how the game presents long-term and moment-to-moment goals to players. There is now a questing system in the game, similar to MMOs, where you pick tasks from characters in the hub city and then go out into PvE or PvP encounters to complete them. These quests push players through the story that already existed, but they also provide good motivation for running missions multiple times, doing strikes and patrols and spending...
