Schemer - The beginning of everything worth doing!
Schemer is the newest baby to join the Google+ family. Launched by a ‘scrappy’ group of moustache-sporting engineers (not really), the site is invitation-only for the time being, not surprising as it is a Google product.
Schemer is basically a space to hunt for things to do. Once you add your location while signing in for the first time, the site runs a list of ‘schemes’ or activities by you. Right now, this list is not very user-specific, and is generated by the partnership that Schemer has formed with sites such as Food Network, Zagat, Brava, IGN, Entertainment Weekly, National Geographic, Thrillist, to name a few.
Once inside the site, users can add ‘schemes’ that they would like to implement, anything from “exploring a new city, checking out a friend’s movie recommendation, or just finding new activities for your weekends”. Also, tags and locations can be added, making it easy for fellow schemers to join you. Got no new schemes of your own? Fret not! Schemer is the perfect place to take a leaf out of the books of other like-minded people. What’s more, the site also records the schemes that you’ve successfully carried out as a list of accomplishments! The more you use Schemer, the better it gets at recommending activities for you, based on your track record.
Schemer has quite a few antecedents like Events on Facebook, Foursquare, 43 Things etc with a similar concept of location based activity sharing. Even though the concept might seem like old wine in a new bottle, the bottle sure is a beautiful one! The wiggly moustache icon and the animations grab some eyeballs. The reception has been good so far, judging by the eagerness of users to get their hands on the invites.
A Google+ account is a prerequisite to join Schemer, but you'd still be on the waiting list and a mobile app is expected to be launched very soon, which would be quite relevant, given the focus on locations. Watch this quirky video before heading over to Schemer!
