It's only fair and right that one of the world's most popular content management/blogging platforms should have a snazzy and capable iPhone app to go with it. The WordPress app has been updated to version 2.9, adding three new features for mobile users. The new version adds handy styling buttons right above the keyboard, so you no...
I have a pile of small USB-powered hard drives that I use to back up various devices. All of them are inexpensive, have somewhat limited storage, and are encased in plastic. The latter feature always makes me apprehensive about traveling with the drives, as they just don't seem to be sturdy enough for a lot of handling. The Iomega...
It's no secret that I have a thing for leather ... leather iPad cases, that is. I like the feel, the aroma, and the warmth that seems to come with natural leather. Griffin Technology has added a new folio case for the iPad 2 to its lineup of protection products. The Elan Passport (US$49.95) is a nice looking, slim, and practical...
Late last night, Apple registered developers who are participating in the iTunes Match beta were notified that their test data will be zapped from orbit. Apple's email to devs was brief and to the point: To continue to improve the overall quality and reliability of iTunes Match, it has become necessary to delete all current iCloud...
When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is the Amazon tablet. Powered by Android, with a 7-inch screen, the Kindle tablet will have a capacitive multitouch screen with traditional LCD technology,...
While getting ready for my husband's move to the US from the UK, we've both been digitizing our DVD collections so it's less for him to haul, and I gain extra room for what he does bring. What I'm using to tag the files for easy browsing in iTunes and on the Apple TV is MetaX. We wrote a tutorial on using the meta-tagging program...
Google's iPhone app for its new social network Google+ has just received a hefty update. Key among the new features of the Google+ app is support for Hangouts, Google's answer to multiuser videoconferencing. Hangouts has seen a lot of use among the TUAW staff so far, and being able to use the feature on an iOS device is a big step...
Samsung's head of global marketing has spoken with the AP recently, and says that he believes Apple is "free-riding" on the company's patents, building phones and touch devices that apparently are unduly influenced by Samsung's inventions. No more Mr. Nice Guy, though -- Lee Younghee, also a senior vice president at Samsung, says...

Security firm F-Secure has unearthed a troubling trojan for Macs that hides itself as a PDF, only waiting until the file is opened up and displaying some Chinese characters before it dives into your Mac's hard drive and sets up a backdoor control. Currently, according to F-Secure, the backdoor doesn't actually do anything harmful,...
As expected, China's newest Apple store opened today in Shanghai. The store's 300 employees were greeted by a crowd of over 500 people on hand for the grand opening. Located on the busy Nanjing road, the store is China's fifth Apple store and its largest. It occupies five stories of retail space and has an expected foot traffic of...
The default compiler in Apple's Xcode developer tools is the LLVM-based Clang. Ars Technica reports that they received a heads-up from a developer who works on low-level ARM assembly coding that the latest version of Clang in Xcode adds support for a quad-core, ARM-based processor from Marvell -- the Armada XP. Ars confirmed that...
Seen that banner ad (above) on the Otterbox website today? It's certainly creating quite the buzz. Is Otterbox promising the debut of two new iPhone models? It turns out that no, they're not. We gave Kelly Richardson of Otterbox a call today and she clarified the matter. "We're not even quite sure ourselves," she told TUAW,...
Twitter was buzzing this morning about a problem with Apple's in-app purchasing system. According to the comments, Apple's receipt verification system is down and developers are losing potential sales. An unconfirmed report from Engadget suggests, Apple may be trying to purge the system of fake receipts. Regardless of the reason,...
Apple has joined the Digital Due Process group, a coalition of privacy organizations like the EFF and companies that are lobbying to reform surveillance laws in the US. The group hopes to modernize the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) which was enacted in 1986, long before the Internet became a household name. The law...
In the day to day usage of your iPad, iPhone, or Mac, the screen and case tend to pick up a lot of crud. Whether it's streaks on the screen from food-covered fingers or spray marks from that unexpected sneeze, you need something good to clean your Apple devices from everyday grime. For me, the solution has been a Toddy Smart Cloth...
Tip of the Day
more tipsYou can restore your Apple TV both on the unit itself and through iTunes. Choose Settings > General > Reset and click Restore to return your device to its factory-fresh state. If you can't make this happen directly, there's also iTunes. Make sure you have a micro USB cable on-hand (a lot of Bluetooth earpieces use this style for recharging, or you can buy one from a local computer store). Disconnect the HDMI cable and plug in the micro USB to your computer. Launch iTunes. You may need to disconnect power as well -- although TUAW's results on this vary. Once iTunes recognizes the unit, you can select it and click Restore. This downloads (if needed) and installs the latest firmware.
