SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Windows Media Player, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:

The MPLAYER2.EXE is linked to missing export MSDXM.OCX:RunDllW.
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe A device attached to the system is not functioning.
The procedure entry point RunDllW could not be located in the dynamic link library msdxm.ocx.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you have an incorrect version of the Msdxm.ocx file in the Windows\System32 folder, or there are multiple copies of the Msdxm.ocx file on your computer. Note that the correct version of this file is 6.01.05.0217.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Windows Media Player 6.4 from the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download)
Test to determine if the issue is resolved, and if not, rename any copies of the Msdxm.ocx file on your computer:
1.Click Start, point to Find, and then click File or Folders.
2.In the Named box, type msdxm.ocx, and then click Find Now.
3.If multiple copies of this file are found, rename those that are not located in the Windows\System32 folder to Msdxm.old, or another unique file name not already in use. To rename a file, right-click it, type a new name, and then press ENTER.
