The Future of the VFX Pipeline: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 🎥 Last week, the Matchmove machine team attended the exclusive Cooke Optics /i Insights event in Los Angeles hosted by Jordan Thistlewood Our artist Vlad Holoshchapov was there to see firsthand the technologies that are about to permanently change the VFX pipeline. Here are the key takeaways: 🎬 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 Hosted in Burbank, the event was just miles from Warner Bros. and Universal. The atmosphere was completely steeped in cutting-edge cinema production. 🔍 “𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐝-𝐈𝐧” 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 & 𝐍𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐧 Cooke showed us the real magic under the hood: how highly detailed metadata is literally “baked” into the lens itself. To extract this data seamlessly in post, they developed a dedicated plugin for Nuke. It pulls precise information — primarily complex distortion parameters — directly from the optics, rather than just the camera body. 🔬 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 During a live demo, they showcased the plugin handling animated distortion on anamorphic shots, looking like a fully polished product. ⚙ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝟑𝐃𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? We had to ask the burning question about 3DE. While direct support isn’t available yet (distortion data is currently extracted via ST Maps), Cooke understands the high demand. They plan to collaborate closely with 3DE developers and eventually open API access to their library so studios can build custom software bridges. 📊 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 In response to these industry shifts, we shared our own developments. 👨🔬 New experiment! We tested the maximum acceptable amount of defocus when shooting distortion grids. We tried to fight defocus using studio tools and 3DEqualizer’s automatic solutions. At the end of the article, we also share reference examples. Now we know when you should close Iris to it's maximum — basically always 😀 — and when even that isn’t enough and you need to move the camera.
