  • It's brilliant to see the transformation of Bristol Temple Island, one of the largest brownfield regeneration sites in the UK. We've worked with Legal & General and Bristol City Council to ensure the enabling works delivered extensive infrastructure improvements, including the installation of the Bristol heat network.   The inclusion of heat network infrastructure as part of the redevelopment means securing modern and sustainable energy infrastructure for future homes and commercial buildings on the site, whilst contributing to Bristol's citywide climate ambitions.   Our heat networks are not just about heating, they’re about revitalising local economies. From job creation and skills development to partnerships with local suppliers. We're proud to support this drive in economic development without comprising on climate targets.   Find out more about the Bristol heat network 👉 https://lnkd.in/euYcKAQb

  • We were delighted to welcome a group of students from Western Michigan University to our Edinburgh office, who travelled all the way from across the pond to learn more about Scotland’s approach to climate change🌍. We were pleased that a visit to hear about all things Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) made it onto their busy schedule while they were in Scotland. It was a great opportunity to showcase the work taking place locally and to share some useful insights💡. • With the Government’s latest plans for the next generation of New Towns, regions including Bristol and London are preparing for the delivery of tens of thousands of new homes. For housing developments of this scale, low carbon heat networks have been cited as an effective way to unlock sustainable, future proofed growth. Referenced within the New Towns Taskforce final report and within the Strategic Environmental Assessment consultation material, heat networks ensure whole new communities can benefit from fairly priced, reliable heat - without the disruption and long term risk of managing complex energy systems alone. Meaning the local energy system can evolve as communities grow. As New Towns move from vision to delivery, now is the moment to build energy systems that will serve communities for decades to come. • Bristol City Council have announced plans to introduce one of the country’s first Heat Network Zones - marking a major milestone in promoting the shift away from fossil fuel reliance and scaling up fairly priced, low carbon heat for homes, businesses and public buildings across the city.   Heat Network Zoning will give developers and building owners the clarity and certainty to connect to a future proofed heat network. For Bristol, this means the city will look to build on the success already achieved in existing heat network areas, where the Bristol heat network is already serving the equivalent of more than 13,000 homes. As the long term partner delivering the Bristol heat network through the Bristol City Leap partnership, we welcome this move.   If you’d like to understand more about heat networks and what we're doing in Bristol, get in contact at bristolbusdev@vattenfall.com or visit our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/euYcKAQb

Bristol is set to accelerate its journey to becoming carbon neutral and reduce its dependence on gas to heat homes and businesses in central Bristol through the government’s new Heat Network Zoning initiative. Bristol City Council is working with the UK Government to implement a heat network zone in central Bristol and will be one of seven cities to adopt the new initiative before being rolled out nationally. A consultation on the proposed heat network zone boundary will be held over the coming months, following approval by councillors in the Environment and Sustainability Committee on Thursday 26 March. The consultation will follow the publication by government of the new proposed national regulations which are expected before the end of June. Find out more: https://orlo.uk/oqNZf

  • We’ve reached a major milestone on our MEL heat network: 100 properties are now connected🏡🎉 This achievement marks an important step forward for our Scotland team. Connections are currently live at two key developments, Craighall Village and Shawfair. To recognise the milestone, we spoke with our Senior Project Manager, Gregor Ford, who oversees the on-site connections. He shared his thoughts on progress so far and what is coming next for the MEL heat network. Read the full Q&A on our website: https://lnkd.in/eMqZu8qa

🌡️ Major changes to heat network regulation are coming, and the property sector will feel the impact.   Last week we kicked off a major new research project exploring how the Government’s new heat network regulations will impact the property sector.   The ambition is clear - the Government is targeting rapid growth in heat networks, aiming for 20% of all heat to come from heat networks by 2050, up from just 5% today. To support this, an extensive programme of regulatory reform is being introduced, including stronger consumer protections, new minimum technical standards and a zoning framework that will require certain buildings within designated areas to connect to a heat network.   ⚠️ These changes will have real implications for the property sector. Many BPF members already supply or use heat through communal or district heating systems, and those with assets in designated zones are likely to be directly affected by new connection requirements.   To understand what this means in practice for real estate investors, developers and owners, we’ve commissioned JLL to lead an in-depth analysis. We’re also pleased to be working with BCLP and Vattenfall Business Solutions UK in supporting this research.   We expect to publish the findings in late Spring.   👉 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eKnJYJ7z   💬 Interested in helping shape the research? We’re pleased to be collaborating with the British Property Federation on new research exploring: ▪️ Why heat networks matter for the property sector ▪️ The challenges and opportunities that regulation brings for developers, investors, owners and more ▪️ Practical advice for the sector, grounded in industry insights. Stuart Allison, our Director of Market Development, commented “Collaborating on forward thinking initiatives like this, supporting the industry to maximise the potential of regulation and navigate its new guidance, is crucial to large scale heat decarbonisation in urban areas across the UK." We’re committed to helping the real estate sector unlock the benefits that heat networks can deliver to buildings and communities – from operational efficiency to fuel security and resilience. • Universities play a big role in shaping both cities and the communities that call them home. Bristol is a vibrant celebration of educational institutes and the University of Bristol new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus (TQEC) is the latest addition to a city that encourages innovation, learning and sustainable development.    Working together, Vattenfall and University of Bristol have delivered a heating and cooling system for TQEC that can capture and reuse excess heat from computer servers. This will help to provide heating and hot water for the rest of the campus in the future, as well as homes and businesses in the local area.   To see the bespoke heating solution in action, and to hear from the team who made it happen, watch our connection film - https://lnkd.in/epVVD7cK Bristol City Leap | University of Bristol | AECOM | Osborne Clarke | Sir Robert McAlpine

  • Sustainability and innovation are high on developer's agendas in London, as highlighted by our partners Related Argent and Opportunity London. • We've been given the green light for a new low carbon energy centre on the Bristol heat network. Bath Road Energy Centre, an all-electric facility, will deliver low carbon heating and hot water to thousands of Bristol homes and businesses, and reduce carbon emissions by up to 65%, compared to a gas boiler. Low carbon heat will be generated using air source heat pumps and electric boilers, with the planned infrastructure working alongside our other energy centres, including the large water source heat pump already running at Castle Park Energy Centre.
