Operators at MWC 2026: AI everywhere, clarity optional
We're almost at the point where it's too late to release your "MWC Takeaway" reviews. That's also the point where I remind everyone that, while it's nice to hear your perspective, what really matters is what the operators were up to.
1️⃣ AI dominated - no surprise there. Operator messaging at MWC 2026 made one thing clear: the industry's moved beyond debating whether AI matters. It’s now embedded across networks, operations, enterprise services, customer experience and even voice.
2️⃣ But strategies diverged sharply. Some telcos positioned AI as a company‑wide transformation layer which is re‑architecting networks, workflows and decision‑making. Others framed it as something more akin to an enhancer: better care, smarter assurance, stronger demos. Both approaches are valid, sure. But they also lead to very different outcomes.
3️⃣ Edge and cloud quietly regained momentum. The edge story circa 2026 wasn’t about (sometimes irrelevant) latency hype. It was about sovereignty. In Europe, in particular, federated edge models shifted from theory to something tangible, with welcome coordination across operators.
4️⃣ Consumer digital services resurfaced. Telcos still haven’t cracked consumer 5G monetisation, but AI is reshaping what “experience” means. Voice, in particular, is emerging as an intelligent, programmable layer - with implications for inclusivity - rather than a legacy utility.
5️⃣ Not everything got louder...or clearer. Open RAN slipped further down the agenda, and 6G remains more vision than business case—compelling technically, but light on near‑term ROI.
Amongst the myriad stories at #MWC26, the operator narrative is special; telcos, after all, are the primary audience most people come to engage with.
