BCG and RAI unveiled a compelling vision for Indian retail: “Winning Codes for Retail 2035 – Capturing the ₹200Tn Prize.” The message was clear: India’s retail decade is just beginning — but only for those willing to make bold choices. Here are my key takeaways: 1.     India remains the most exciting retail growth story: India continues to outpace major economies in GDP & consumption growth. Retail, which stood at ₹90–95 Tn in 2025, is expected to exceed ₹200 Tn by 2035. Discretionary & services consumption are growing faster than staples — signalling premiumisation, experience-seeking behaviour & a more confident consumer. However, organized retail’s growth adv over the broader market has narrowed, particularly in offline. The implication? Growth will not come automatically. Differentiation is now mandatory. 2.     Winning retailers make sharp trade-offs. One of the strongest themes: clarity beats scale. Global case studies across fashion, grocery, electronics & home improvement show a pattern: - Clear target cohort - Explicit trade-offs (what they won’t do) - Operating model aligned to value proposition Retail winners build a self-reinforcing flywheel: Focused CVP → Customer pull → Scale advantage → Better economics → Reinvestment → Stronger CVP. In other words, trying to be everything to everyone is the fastest way to lose. 3.     Agentic Commerce is not theoretical – it is here: The report highlights that 42% of urban US consumers have already used GenAI tools, with AI increasingly influencing discovery, evaluation & even transaction execution. Discovery → Consideration → Purchase. All 3 stages are being reshaped by AI agents. For retailers, this creates both: - Risk: traffic loss, margin pressure, loyalty erosion - Opportunity: higher conversion, automated personalization, deeper integration into ecosystems India’s rapid digital adoption history suggests we will not be far behind. 4.     AI-led transformation must be end-to-end: Retailers adopting AI at scale are seeing 40–60% structural gains, versus 10–15% from isolated use cases.   This is not about pilots. It is about: - AI-powered storefronts - Agent ecosystems - Data platforms - Talent redesign - Governance reset The role of the merchant, mktr & operator will fundamentally change. 5.     Offline retail has a pivotal opportunity: Despite slower growth, offline retail remains structurally cash-generative, while online players have sharply reduced burn. The next decade is not offline vs online. It is about who reinvents faster. My Reflection: Indian retail stands at an inflection point. The ₹200Tn opportunity will not be captured by expansion alone. It will be captured by retailers who: - Make explicit choices - Redesign journeys for AI-native consumers - Transform core functions, not just mktg - Build trust across Bharat and Metro India - Treat transformation as a discipline, not a project The question is no longer “Will retail grow?” The question is “Who will earn the right to grow"!

I was reading a recent IDC report on India’s smartphone market, and it was encouraging to see the kind of growth and momentum the industry is witnessing. The report highlights that the market grew around 4% year-on-year in Q3 2025, touching nearly 48 million units, marking one of the strongest quarters in recent years. This growth is being led by premium demand, with customers buying both new flagship devices and previous-generation models, clearly indicating a shift towards higher-value smartphones. It was also interesting to see brands like Apple record their highest-ever quarterly shipments in India, reinforcing the fact that consumer preferences are steadily moving up the value curve, while entry-level demand remains relatively softer. Looking ahead to 2026, I believe growth will come from deeper penetration beyond metros and from retailers who can combine trust, service, and accessibility. Smartphones are no longer impulse purchases but customers today want guidance and a dependable offline experience. Over the last decade, many digital-first brands scaled rapidly on marketplaces—low overheads, aggressive pricing, flash sales. But when they entered mainline retail, cracks appeared: • Offline retailers demanded margin parity • Distributors sought inventory protection • Price undercutting eroded trust • Brand equity weakened Conversely, legacy offline brands entering e-commerce struggled with discount wars, rating economics, and algorithm-led visibility. The core issue? Price asymmetry. In India, channel conflict is not about reach — it is about trust and economics. Retailers survive on predictable margins. Marketplaces thrive on dynamic pricing. When MOP (Market Operating Price) in Mainline market is higher than MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) on e commerce portal, three things happen: 1. Retailer confidence collapses 2. India’s Tech & Durables Market in 2024: Strong Growth, Premium Push & Channel Shifts GfK’s latest insights reveal that 2024 was a year of steady growth and evolving consumer preferences across India's Tech & Durables (T&D) market — especially in SDA, MDA, and smartphones. Market at a Glance The industry grew by 9% in value and 4% in volume, signaling a closing gap between the two and highlighting a shift toward affordable premium products. While festive deals in Q4 boosted spending, volume growth slowed to 1%, but value still rose by 6%, reaffirming the premiumization trend. Channel Evolution Online channels made major gains, especially in Small Domestic Appliances (SDA). In September 2024, online sales surpassed offline. By October, they nearly matched offline performance. This surge was driven by large-scale e-commerce events like the Great Indian Festival, Black Friday, and Big Billion Days. While Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) continued shifting toward organized retail, SDA remained largely independent-channel led — except for vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, where organized and online channels gained traction. Category Spotlights SDA posted 20%+ growth in both value and volume, led by air coolers, fueled by extreme summer heat. With pollution peaking in northern India (Delhi AQI > 500), air purifier sales soared: +65% volume growth +48% value growth Vacuum cleaners saw robust growth across channels. Online demand for robotic vacuum cleaners skyrocketed, showing a 120% value growth. The cooling segment bounced back after a dip in 2023, logging over 5% growth. Side-by-side refrigerators (SBS) led with double-digit gains. Technology & Smartphones Laptops increasingly leaned on the organized channel — 35% share in 2024, up from 29% in 2021. Gaming laptops gained traction. Mainstream notebooks outpaced premium, driven by Intel-powered devices. In smartphones, premiumization continued: +26% in value, +23% in volume New entrants in the premium space pushed this trend forward. Takeaway 2024 was a defining year for India’s tech retail ecosystem. Rising aspirations, channel shifts, and the growing appeal of value-driven premium products are shaping a dynamic and competitive landscape.
