This week I’ve been up to Newcastle and Carlisle to show how versatile ifm’s combined code reader and vision sensor really is - the O2U5. We had some really positive feedback on the hardware and the software - rotatable M12 plugs was a new one for me! Anyway, today’s post is to show how we can set up multiple reference images using different coloured LED’s, which are built into the O2U5 Vision Sensor, to potentially solve a complex application. This may be changing ambient light conditions or the target may have different colours which need to be analysed. Did you know Scottish company Tunnock’s use Beckhoff technology to package their wafer bars? They were able to shorten the machine footprint by using the XTS system. The flexibility and output are huge gains for high-performance packaging systems. This means more of my favourite biscuits in a shorter amount of time! A collaboration between Beckhoff Automation and Syntegon, a global leader in process and packaging technology is what helped provide the automation solution. When your control system components are no longer supported, how to migrate without disruption💡 Challenge🤔 A client was running Siemens S5 PLCs tied to obsolete pneumatic valve islands, connected over an aging Sinec-L2 network. Spares were unavailable and support had ceased. Our approach🛠️ - Full site audit and mapping of I/O structure - Replacement of 9 valve stations and re-wiring to Profibus, while keeping the existing process logic intact - Software updates and communication reconfiguration - Phased installation strategy to avoid plant outage Outcomes✅ - Obsolescence risk eliminated - Minimal downtime during migration - Improved reliability & maintainability - No change needed in SCADA layer therefore lower downstream cost Takeaway 👉 legacy automation systems may work today but for how long?
