They have now opened the first phase of Assessor recruitment, which will focus on Advanced Connectivity Technologies (ACT), also known as Future Telecoms. Applications are open until 19 November. As an Assessor, you’ll help evaluate funding applications that could define the next decade of connectivity. You’ll work flexibly, be paid for your time, and join others committed to inclusive progress. They’re looking for Expert Assessors with lived, applied or professional expertise in ACT. Future recruitment rounds will focus on other areas; you can register your interest if you have expertise in a different sector. This is the first round since the work many of us have been working with Innovate UK (through Let’s Fund More Women, the Women Forum Committee and other bodies). This year brings stronger support. Up to sixty women will receive a £75,000 grant plus business support and visibility. A second group of highly commended founders will also get tailored backing, which helps avoid the all or nothing pressure of previous rounds. The focus is sharper. The awards now target later-stage women founders with an MVP, early traction and plans to raise in the next 12 to 24 months. The scope has tightened around advanced manufacturing, digital and technologies and life sciences. The ten-week window recognises added load over the festive period. The new question set is clearer and user tested, which should cut time spent guessing what a question means. Founders can now reuse answers across future opportunities. A quick suitability checker should also save time. Last year the labour cost of applying was significant. Our analysis at Let’s Fund More Women showed applicants spent an estimated £1.92 million in time and more than 87,000 hours preparing submissions. These changes will not remove that cost completely but they should reduce waste and help founders judge quickly if this is the right opportunity. Innovate UK is a large public body and cannot operate at startup speed but it is listening. The updates show genuine intent to make the process clearer and more accessible. We should also be honest. The pot remains small for the ambition the UK has for women-led innovation. If we want these sectors to grow, founders need more than a single grant. This milestone is revealing to be even bigger and more impactful than I thought, and, if I am honest, more personal than ever. I know that Venture Cafe and the work we plan to do has nothing to do with me but I am, after all, Italian and, by definition a "prima donna" (you see, Italians are allowed to say that about themselves). What I felt last week as I saw so many people walk through the EFI doors was extraordinary. People I have met, worked with, supported, connected, had one or a 100 conversations with showed up for VCE, showed up for me. They came driven by curiosity but also by the willingness to support a vision I have been pushing for a long time: that together, we are a stronger community. And so almost 300 people, many more we had budgeted for (sorry for those who didn't get any pizza) came to witness the launch of something magic, something that is going to be a catalyst for connection, growth and belonging in Edinburgh and beyond. It was a great sense of professional and also personal achievement, a great sense of satisfaction and somehow of calmness. I finally feel I belong. Lynne Cadenhead liked thisLynne Cadenhead liked thisWomen are losing their voices on this platform and the data is right in front of us... There has been a clear shift on LinkedIn in the last twelve months and I have watched my reach fall from millions of views per post to a few thousand. I thought it was just me. Then I started talking to other women and realised it is happening everywhere. Women who lead teams. Women who run companies. Women who speak with honesty and softness and emotional depth. It is the same pattern - their content is being pushed down. Posts written with emotional depth, vulnerability, or soft honesty are receiving far less reach than before. Yet when men speak about the same topics, in the same emotional tone, the algorithm seems to reward it. This is not because women are writing less powerful content. It is because the algorithm is rewarding what it interprets as authority language, often coded as male. Posts that use agentic words, direct statements and a more assertive tone are being pushed out more widely. Empathy based content is being limited. The data is visible on thousands of accounts. The irony is that men like Jake Humphrey Steven Bartlett and Daniel Priestley talk about these things often, but their delivery is still framed as leadership, advice and direction. When women speak from the same emotional space, the algorithm reads it as personal reflection and deprioritises it. When women communicate with nuance, reflection or emotional truth, the reach drops. This is bias in design. Even in 2025. I refuse to believe that women’s perspectives are less valuable. I refuse to believe that softness is less important than strength. I refuse to believe that emotion belongs only to men with podcasts. So I am running some experiments over the next few weeks. Different styles of writing. Different types of images. Even a different version of myself generated through AI to see how the platform responds. Because if a male version of me receives more reach than the real me, then we have a bigger problem than an algorithm update. If you are a woman who has noticed the same thing, I would love you to share this post. The more voices we bring together, the harder this becomes to ignore. Visibility should not depend on gendered language patterns - it should depend on the value behind the message. Our voices matter. They always have. And they will continue to, even if the system needs reminding. Yes, your number of followers have a significant impact, but when my impressions drop from 7 million to 900 consistently, something is clearly off. The importance of the link between academia and industry is well illustrated by Imperial College’s Fleming Initiative against Anti Microbial Resistance (AMR) now being joined by the giant pharma GSK. AMR is a huge threat to the global population and the evolution and sensitivity of the skin’s microbiome is an area of ongoing interest for Ten Bio.
