Those hoping for the Commission to give more details on the AI Act's template on model training data were disappointed, as only aggregate data on the feedback received was presented. The discussions on the template will continue, including at the political level, and the intent is still to publish it by Q2. The template will be published in an annex to the Commission's upcoming guidelines on the AI Act's GPAI rules. https://lnkd.in/eGR-BGgy

With journalists increasingly facing malicious lawsuits aimed at silencing their reporting, the Thomson Reuters Foundation has published this guide on how to make stories as legally watertight as possible. Key points include the importance of accuracy and verifying sources, fairness and balance, and offering the right of reply. "While this may not prevent SLAPPs or other legal attacks on journalists, this guide seeks to assist journalists in: acting ethically; limiting their legal liability; ensuring that they may raise a reasonable defence before a court to avoid unfair legal sanctions". https://lnkd.in/gNh3NpzE

The stand-out statistic from this year's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's Digital News Report is this: "Overall, we find that audiences on average across all markets still prefer text (55%), which provides both speed and control from a consumers' perspective." If most of our audience still prefers text, maybe we should be putting our resources into writing more damn good stories - instead of rushing into expensive experiments with audio and video hosted on platforms over which we have no control. That means creating beautiful products that put text stories first (The Continent News is one model); and hiring back all the copy editors, who are always the first people to go when newsrooms downsize (shout out here to Matthew Du Plessis, whose SEO-unfriendly headline wizardry makes our text stories come alive. See below for one of my favourites).

🚨 Behind the scenes: Outlook Business Outperformers 2026 In media, like elsewhere, there is a rising focus on IP creation. The general view is that most news is commoditised. So newsrooms across the world are trying to create IPs—events, podcasts, lists—that can stand out as an original offering. Whereas news is a centuries-old exercise with well-established guardrails and best practices, these IPs are a relatively new phenomenon that media organisations and journalists are dealing with. As a result, three things happen: a) Many a time, media IPs end up looking like glossy ads without editorial heft. There is a lot of celebration but hardly any deeply researched critique that is supposed to be our bread and butter. b) When the ‘I’ of IP goes missing, it again becomes a commodity—a vanilla property that starts looking and feeling similar to rivals. c) Oftentimes, IPs are treated like the proverbial golden goose—and that’s probably why a Bollywood actor ends up being among the most important people in AI, or a scamster gets feted as a young achiever. Ultimately, this short-term thinking kills the IP. At Outlook Business, we are always careful not to fall into this trap. That’s why every year, when we go through the ranking process, we ask ourselves: what is the original thought we are bringing to the system? At each step, we ask what the novel differentiator is this year, and how it can be made more of a diagnostic report of the startup ecosystem rather than a glossy feature.
