We welcome today's publication of the UK Government's ambitious new International Education Strategy. In the announcement, FCDO Minister Baroness Chapman confirmed that the British Council will be a strategic partner in the Government's aim of growing education exports, using our expertise to strengthen education systems around the world.   We will collaborate closely with the Government, the devolved nations, and the education sector to deliver the Strategy's three ambitions, particularly the new ambition to ensure that the UK is the global partner of choice at every stage of learning.   The new strategy supports our belief that continued international engagement in education through student mobility to and from the UK, sustainable transnational education, and sharing expertise through academic collaboration will enhance the UK’s global influence.   Our research shows that the UK's world-class education system is a critical enabler of trust in the UK. It provides opportunities for transformative international experiences and mutually beneficial partnerships that build long-term connections with alumni, improve access to education, contribute to tackling global challenges, and promote economic growth. We're thrilled to announce that whatimpact.com has been selected once again to distribute approximately £800,000 in #SharedProsperityFund grants to organisations serving Newport, Wales residents. Our previous grant management experience received outstanding feedback regarding efficiency, quality, and impact assessment through our comprehensive reporting system. The 60+ VCSE projects funded last year praised our approach. Our success stems from leveraging data and technology to minimise administrative burden while maximising focus on achieving target outcomes. This ensures the greatest possible impact for Newport communities. Applications for this new funding round will open in May 2025, with full details available soon. We look forward to supporting another year of impactful community projects across Newport. It is right that the UK government seeks to utilise AI tools to support better and more tailored public services. But with today’s announcement of government partnerships with Meta and Anthropic, you have to hope that AI deployment in UK public services is done responsibly. Anthropic has agreed to pay out billions of dollars in the US in compensation to publishers and authors for its use of pirated work in the training of its AI models, while Meta has publicly admitted to using pirate networks including LibGen and Anna's Archive to do the same. The closer our public services are entwined with AI companies, the stronger the case gets for our government to take a firm line on transparency and copyright and deliver AI services that act in the UK public interest. A bit of news for World Quantum Day. We are announcing the next tranche of funding through the UK's National Quantum Technologies Programme. £121m over the next year for: - Accelerating the deployment of the technologies through industry projects in computing, networking, PNT and sensing - The work of the National Quantum Computing Centre, including the flagship testbed programme, with support from the Quantum Software Lab - Our five research hubs, with new investment in skills and training - Support for early-career researchers and quantum-enabled apprenticeships - NPL's quantum measurement programme Huge thanks to all of the UKRI, NPL and DSIT colleagues who have helped to line this up.
