But the latest strategic video from Munich Re (link in the first comment) reveals a ticking time bomb beneath insurers' balance sheets: what we once called "#Secondary #Perils" - such as massive wildfires in January or flash floods -have become the primary drivers of global loss. 2025 appeared "average" on the surface only because of atmospheric luck (zero major U.S. hurricane landfalls). But beneath that calm, the traditional insurance model is buckling. Here are 3 key takeaways from the video that every industry leader needs to grasp: 1️⃣ Luck is Not a Strategy: The lull in hurricane activity was a fluke. The "Planet’s Fever" is increasing the frequency of "small" but lethal events that erode profitability year-round. You cannot build a sustainable business model on atmospheric luck. 2️⃣ The 10:1 Rule: Munich Re highlights a staggering figure- every dollar invested in prevention saves $10 in losses. In terms of ROI, there is no smarter investment in the industry. Prevention isn't "activism"; it’s the most sophisticated economic arbitrage on the market. 3️⃣ From First Aid to Lifestyle: Traditional insurance is a band-aid. If the insurance industry can create and support a definition for the distinct peril of Wildfire Conflagration, then the market can start to value, support and incentivize resilience and mitigation in substantial ways.🐇 🌟Evyatar Amira reacted on thisWildfire risk isn’t what most people think it is. The real issue for insurers is conflagration—when wildfire enters the built environment and turns homes into fuel. That’s when: • Multiple ignitions happen at once • Resources get overwhelmed • Fire spreads structure-to-structure At that point, it’s no longer a wildfire problem. It’s a systemic insurance event. AI adoption in insurance is often framed as a technology challenge. In practice, it’s a customer segmentation challenge. In many CEE markets, a large customer segment still prefers traditional, non-digital channels, working one-to-one with a human consultant. Trust is built through personal interaction, and there’s reluctance to move toward AI-driven advice or decisions. In parallel, a smaller but growing digital-native segment already consumes insurance online and expects self-service, automation, and AI-assisted journeys. These segments coexist. The challenge for insurers is not choosing between human or AI, but adopting different operating models for different customers, at the same time.

Marshmallow was founded to fix unfair insurance pricing for newcomers to the UK, using proprietary tech and alternative data to offer fairer car insurance, often up to 45% cheaper, by considering driving histories from any country. The result? Over 1 million drivers insured, a $2 billion valuation, and a $500 million revenue run rate. Their ambition is to become a one-stop financial shop for migrants, expanding into home insurance, loans, and more, all tailored to the unique challenges newcomers face, serving as an excellent example to build a vertical ecosystem. What’s the playbook for UAE Insurtechs? Go deep, not wide: focus on a specific segment- expats, SMEs, gig workers, and solve their real pain points Leverage proprietary tech: use alternative data and AI to build pricing models; an excellent example of using alternative data is the insurtech Relm Insurance! Expand vertically: once you’ve built trust with one product, layer on adjacent services that make sense Own the customer journey: control the full value chain, from onboarding to claims Marshmallow’s success shows that the real opportunity lies in specialization and relevance. By understanding the unique needs of a defined customer group and building an ecosystem around them, insurers can create lasting loyalty and defend against both legacy competitors and new digital entrants. With two conferences coming up in one week, both centered around the topic "Future of Insurance" I wanted to share five predictions that I believe will shape the industry in the coming years. First, embedded insurance is gaining traction. This means insurance will be seamlessly integrated into non-insurance products, offered at the point of purchase or interaction, and enabled through partnerships between insurers and other industries. Second, usage-based insurance, or UBI, is on the rise. Premiums will be based on real-time usage data, tracked through IoT or telematics, ensuring coverage matches individual risk profiles more accurately. Third, micro-insurance is set to expand. It offers low-cost coverage for small risks, targeting underserved and low-income groups, and is often delivered via mobile or digital platforms to maximize accessibility. Fourth, industry distribution is being modernized with digital tools. Technologies like AI, cloud, and blockchain are streamlining operations, improving underwriting, and enhancing customer service across the board. Finally, AI is transforming the insurance landscape. From analytics to underwriting and claims, AI leverages big data, machine learning, and NLP to drive smarter decisions and better outcomes. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these trends. The new age of Insurtechs will not be defined by who has the slickest app or the biggest distribution force. True value will come from: Specialised, innovative products that solve niche customer risks (EVs, gig workers, cyber, climate). AI-backed automation for underwriting, pricing, servicing, and claims. Minimal human involvement – with teams focusing on oversight, not execution. The Insurtechs that will win: • Build AI-first ecosystems, not just digital brokerages. • Leverage unique data advantages • Scale without scaling headcount. • Embed themselves within customer journeys through partnerships and ecosystems. 74% of insurance companies are running AI pilots. Only 7% have scaled them. We just contributed to a whitepaper on this with NashTech and Insurtech UK. That gap doesn't surprise me at all. Most of these pilots are bolting shiny new AI onto systems that are literally decades old. Broken plumbing everywhere. And even when people know it's broken, rethinking processes means shrinking teams. Teams want to keep their headcount. Turkeys don't vote for christmas. That's why AI-native wins. Y Combinator just dropped their Spring 2026 request for startups. Every single category is AI-native something. Over half their recent batches are agentic AI companies. They're not asking founders to improve existing tools. They want companies built from scratch assuming agents do most of the work. The pattern is always the same. Startups that rebuild from zero outperform incumbents that patch what they've got. Then the smart incumbents buy the ones that worked. That becomes their innovation strategy. Really enjoyed contributing alongside Mosaic, Hastings Direct, WPA, Fujitsu and others. But that 74% vs 7% gap tells you everything. It's not a technology problem. It's a willingness-to-start-over problem.
