🔬 Biosensor developers have a lot to juggle..... From robust surface chemistries and matrix interferences, to optimising electrochemical parameters and maximising signal transduction. With so much going on, some things inevitably get overlooked. One of those things? 👉 Reference electrodes (REs). We all know how important they are, yet outside of fundamental electrochemistry research, they often get taken for granted. While initial testing is common to ensure they are working as intended… Monitoring of the REs can sometimes stop at this point. Harsh surface chemistries, successive fabrication steps, poor storage conditions, and repeated measurements can slowly take their toll on the RE’s stability effecting biosensing performance. A drifting or unstable RE can introduce errors of several millivolts… enough to: ⚡ Blur real signals ⚡ Compromise calibration curves ⚡ Undermine reproducibility To help, use Electrochemical Insight's Excel template for calibrating and tracking reference electrodes. The UK’s most powerful NMR Facility is set to open at the University of Birmingham. We have received a 1.2 Gigahertz NMR spectrometer, one of only two in the UK, to enable groundbreaking research in biomolecular mechanisms.   Supported by £6M from UK Research and Innovation and additional investment from the University, this facility is not only a milestone for Birmingham but a resource for the UK’s scientific community and industry partners, establishing the West Midlands as a new powerhouse for NMR spectroscopy.   Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful probe of biomolecular structure and function. The newly installed 1.2 gigahertz (GHz) spectrometer will allow better resolution, increased sensitivity, and new frontiers such as allowing researchers to study large biomolecular assemblies, observe previously "invisible" molecular interactions, dynamics, and transient states.   Professor Teresa Carlomagno from the University of Birmingham said: “This instrument will allow us to determine the 3D shapes of complex molecules, which is crucial because molecular shape dictates function. Our latest work is now online Royal Society of Chemistry ChemComm, Manchester Institute of Biotechnology! In this feature article, Sarah-Jane Richards and I highlight the progress we have made, in developing polymer-tethered glycosylated gold nanoparticles. This includes the synthetic rationale for the approach we take, to ensure it is modular and ensuring complex glycans (not just monosaccharides!) can be integrated. We have found these tools to be very useful for probing glycan/lectin and glycan/viral, interactions and highlight their potential in glycobiology, as well as translational tools for biosensing/diagnostics, as well as the challenges. Over the last few weeks I’ve been setting up nanospray-desorption electrospray ionisation (nano-DESI) at the Rosalind Franklin Institute. Personally, this is an exciting moment as it expands technology and methods that I’ve worked on for years to another lab! Nano-DESI enables mass spectrometry imaging and native top-down mass spectrometry of intact proteoforms and protein complexes directly from tissues. Helen Cooper’s team will be advancing nano-DESI as part of the Integrated Chemical Imaging in Cells & Tissues challenge: https://lnkd.in/eY_B_FMw

If you have ten samples to scan, what would you do? A. Set a timer for each scan and go back to the lab to change the sample nine times. B. Put all ten samples on an automatic sample changer and go to the beach. I used to do A, but I prefer B. My colleague Ted showed me how he set up his sample changer today. Using a sample changer combined with custom sample mounts not only saves you time but also helps keep the sample orientation consistent.
