I came across this blog discussing the challenges and wanted to touch on the points, feel free to add any other points of view. The CISO Challenge --------------------- Managing Risk, Reputation, and People: CISOs face challenges like porous cloud infrastructure, human error, cultural roadblocks, and shadow IT. - less about challenging them. It is about simply ensuring that you and the build use the same language and results. Rephrase and ask if you understood their questions, ideas, and concerns so that you are working on the right target Visibility into Assets: Defining and cataloging assets is crucial for protection. - would add that as assets are combined or processed with other organization functions, the value of an asset after the process can come out with an enrichment that needs to be considered. Shadow IT: Unapproved IT systems create visibility issues and risks. - Using multiple layers of unapproved devices is one way to improve control over this. Possible actions include job sanctions, company data or systems misuse for unauthorized activities, or termination if necessary. Financial reviews, network, systems access control, and even restricted access to time and location. Product Attack Surface: Mistakes in production can lead to cyber risks. - This is true, which is why Third Party Risk Management programs so evaluate companies' pose to the business based on their place within the product cycle and access to other technology systems. It is not just about your connection to them and you, but also how they manage their risk posture with others or within them as you become a downstream target. Corporate Infrastructure: Human error and unsanctioned cloud systems pose risks. - this means that the organization needs to rescope the technology and limit it to a manageable business risk or invest in maturing its controls to help implement and deploy those controls. Cultural Change: Building a security-first culture is essential. - Setting organizational norms of a safety and risk management practice can help all employees start to see the implications of risk. Sales Enablement: CISOs help build strong security stories for sales teams. - without a business to secure and help deliver its mission, what is there to keep you employed Compliance: Ensuring compliance with regulations and satisfying auditors. - Having more open conversations about systems, processes, and procedures can help illuminate safer business practices that consider compliance simultaneously.
