Three female cofounded health technology companies have secured investment from STAC, Scotland’s industry-led accelerator for technology start-ups. Smplicare, Silver Lion Innnovations, and Seluna will receive an initial combined investment of over £1 million. All three businesses invested in have female co-founders who are developing technology solutions to tackle healthcare challenges. Wasn't aware of STAC until now. Good to see! We often discuss startups partnering with government institutions — and when the government is the client, we often focus on the challenges that come with it. But in the UK, startups are actually spun out of government, transforming public-sector laboratory innovation into valuable solutions for industry and society. Ploughshare is a UK-based organisation founded in 2005 and fully owned by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Its mission is to commercialise government-owned innovations, mainly IP developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and other public science bodies, to deliver real-world benefits. I spoke with CEO Hetti Barkworth-Nanton CBE to learn all about it. (Link in comments).

In the UK, we’re often hesitant about selling. There’s a cultural discomfort with it as if being direct about value is something to be avoided. But in business, selling isn’t optional… it’s essential. Every founder needs to learn how to sell. Not just how to talk about a product, but how to position it, how to create urgency and how to communicate its value clearly and confidently. Because no matter how good your product is, it means nothing if no one knows about it. Visibility is just as important as quality. You can have the best product in the market but if you can’t convince people to care, it won’t go anywhere. Selling isn’t just being pushy it’s a skill. And it’s one every successful entrepreneur inevitably masters, whether selling to customers or investors.

Post 14 of 100 - Does Your Startup Qualify for EIS? After #SEIS comes #EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) - and this is where many founders move from raising their first small round into larger, growth-stage rounds. Here’s the plain English version of the rules To qualify for EIS: 1. Your company must be less than 7 years old from its first commercial sale (with some exceptions). 2. You must be carrying out a qualifying trade in the UK. 3. You must have gross assets under £15m before the investment (and under £16m after). 4. You must have fewer than 250 full-time employees (or up to 500 if you’re a knowledge-intensive company). 5. You can raise a maximum of £12m in total (£20m for knowledge-intensive companies). What’s a qualifying trade? Most trading businesses qualify. But like SEIS, some do not - traditional property development, banking, insurance, and legal services are excluded. Knowledge-intensive companies If you’re a startup doing heavy R&D, hardware, or innovation, the rules are more generous: 6. Higher employee limits. 7. Higher fundraising limits. 8. Extended timelines. Why this matters: If you don’t understand these rules early, you risk timing your fundraising wrong or disqualifying yourself by mistake. For underserved founders, this is another hidden barrier - most don’t even hear about EIS until they’re already trying to raise. By then, it can be too late. This is Post 14 of 100. As co-founder of PharmAppy®, a company born out of a mission to simplify and strengthen patient access to pharmacy services, I’ve reviewed the recently published NHS 10-Year Plan with interest.⁣⁣ ⁣ There’s a lot to be encouraged by in this vision, a future where patients are empowered through digital access, where data flows seamlessly to improve outcomes, and where clinicians are freed from the administrative weight that has long held back progress. The ambition to create “the most digitally accessible health system in the world” is one we absolutely support.⁣⁣ ⁣ But with ambition must come realism.⁣⁣ ⁣ The plan talks about putting “power in your hands,” a move from bricks to clicks, and the transformation of the NHS App into a digital front door to the whole system. On paper, it’s compelling. In practice, executing that vision across a vast, decentralised and historically slow-moving system is a monumental challenge. And it’s here where smaller, agile innovators can make a real difference, if given the chance.⁣⁣ ⁣ Too often, the NHS inadvertently builds walls instead of bridges. Large-scale procurement processes, complex partnerships, and risk-averse mindsets favour only the biggest players - those with dedicated teams just to handle paperwork, compliance, and red tape. That leaves the smaller, more nimble, frontline-driven teams locked out. And yet, it’s these very teams who live the real-world problems daily and are already building the solutions pharmacies and patients need and want.⁣⁣ ⁣ Pharmacies are a perfect example. They’re some of the most accessible healthcare providers in the country. And yet, they are stuck waiting for sustainable NHS service contracts that never quite materialise - or if they do, they’re barely viable. So, pharmacies are increasingly looking elsewhere. Private services aren’t just a backup plan anymore, they’re fast becoming the primary engine for sustainability and growth.⁣⁣ ⁣ The future of pharmacy and access to services will not be decided in lengthy plans or strategy papers alone. It will be shaped by what actually reaches patients, quickly, safely, and at scale. That means embracing collaboration with those already building tools that work. It means making the NHS not just a commissioner, but a platform that welcomes innovation.⁣⁣ ⁣ At PharmAppy, we believe in a hybrid future, one where NHS services and private options can co-exist in a patient-first ecosystem.
