“I worked with Ally Brown at People's Energy in 2021. He was brought in as an industry expert and soon became the authority on any questions related to settlements, industry processes, data flows and process flows. He was always a pleasure to work with, generous with his knowledge sharing and keen to pick up new skills. He also put in an extra effort to brighten up our morning group meetings. I have a relatively small list of people that I would like to work with again in the future and Ally is definitely on that list.”

Our Power division has been awarded a new five-year framework contract with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, supporting the delivery of OHL services across its 33kV network, with an opportunity to extend for a further three years. Covering the Ridgeway Lot 2 region, including Bicester, Oxford, Swindon and Marlborough, the framework marks a significant milestone for Ipsum as our first contract with SEPD and a key step in expanding our presence across the UK electricity distribution sector. Under the framework, our teams will deliver the full lifecycle of overhead line services, including construction, maintenance, refurbishment and dismantlement of infrastructure across LV, 11kV and 33kV networks. The scope also includes associated enabling works and emergency response capability to support network resilience during severe weather events. Lee Maxwell, Managing Director of Power at Ipsum said: “This framework award with Southern Electric Power Distribution represents a significant milestone in the continued development of our Power division and further strengthens our position within the UK electricity distribution sector. It builds on the work we have already successfully delivered across the electricity distribution network and is a testament to the hard work, capability and commitment of our teams. The award reflects both the strength of our national delivery model and our ability to consistently support DNOs in delivering essential infrastructure investment programmes. We look forward to continuing to develop our relationship with SEPD and to delivering safe, efficient and high-quality overhead line services across their network.” Nigel Geraghty, National OHL Director at Ipsum, said: “This is a significant award for our Power division and a clear endorsement of our technical capability, operational discipline and delivery model. Securing our first framework with SEPD marks an important step in expanding our relationships within the UK distribution network sector.” For the full story, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/eqJTZVm2 #Power #Utilities #Electricity #Infrastructure #OverheadLines #DistributionNetworks #Engineering #NetZero #EnergyTransition #UK #RIIOED2 SSE plc

At Utility Aid, we work exclusively with charities and not-for-profit organisations, helping them navigate an increasingly complex and volatile energy market. For charities, using an energy broker is not about chasing the cheapest headline rate. It is about value, certainty, and protecting funds that are meant to support communities and causes. We help charities and not-for-profits to create value by: • Securing energy contracts that balance price with risk and long-term stability • Accessing a wide panel of trusted suppliers, including charity-aligned options • Reducing internal time and resource spent on negotiations, renewals, and supplier management • Providing clear, auditable recommendations that support trustee governance and accountability • Identifying billing errors and inefficiencies that lead to unnecessary costs • Aligning energy procurement with sustainability and net zero objectives without increasing spend Most charity teams are lean by design. Our role is to deliver measurable value beyond unit rates, ensuring energy procurement supports financial resilience and long-term planning. We are always happy to provide a no-obligation review and straightforward advice.

How do we tackle the skills crisis in utilities — and keep people for the long term? National Grid’s transmission apprenticeship programme has held an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating since 2005, with over 90% of engineering apprentices staying for more than a decade. On Thursday 23 April, Utility Week is hosting a free webinar, in association with Energy & Utility Skills, to explore what’s behind this success and what the wider sector can learn. Commenting on the government’s consultation into network charges for energy intensive businesses, Anthony Ainsworth, Chief Operating Officer at npower Business Solutions, said: “The four-week consultation into the proposed increase in discount on energy intensive businesses’ electricity network charges from 60% to 90% was one of the measures included in the recent Modern Industrial Strategy, and will be hugely welcome to those companies who are set to be positively impacted by the changes. UK industry has to remain competitive, and this is one step to creating a more level playing field with its European counterparts when it comes to energy costs. “That said, this is just one step. While the government has also committed to consulting on the new British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme, which it says will affect more than 7,000 UK businesses, many organisations will fall outside the eligibility criteria. So, it is crucial that government works in partnership with business to ensure a good outcome for all. “Businesses have long told us that non-commodity costs are the area where they would like to see reform - it was a theme that was raised in our 2024 Business Energy Tracker and one we will be investigating further this year - particularly as they are only set to rise as we transition to a clean power system. So these measures are a good step in the right direction and we look forward to engaging with government through the consultation process.”

As one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers, OVO is helping accelerate the energy transition by investing in renewables and supporting customers with Zero Carbon Living solutions. But like many in the sector, its business model still relies on natural gas. We worked with OVO to assess climate risks and transition opportunities, identify how policy, temperature shifts, and supply chain issues could impact its bottom line and where innovation can drive resilience. Discover the full story of OVO’s journey to adapting and futureproofing its business model here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eNBS9pf5

National Gas • 7K followers
As we enter a pivotal season for our industry and network, I’m proud to share that today National Gas has published its Gas Winter Outlook 2025. The report shows we’re well positioned to meet peak demand this winter, with a strong and flexible supply mix and robust system resilience. But this year’s Outlook also highlights a broader shift: as our energy system changes, we must remain alert and proactive. We’re working closely with government, industry, and partners to respond to new challenges and ensure security of supply for the future. The National Transmission System is the primary energy system for power, supporting electricity generation, fuelling industry, and heating homes. It also plays a crucial role as a strategic backup for renewables when output is low. We’ve seen that gas demand for power can swing sharply depending on the weather, and that volatility shows just how important it is to have a flexible, responsive system that can keep things stable as we move towards a low-carbon future. Our forecast for gas demand for power on a peak 1-in-20 day has increased by 10 million cubic metres per day, or 12%. This highlights the evolving and vital role of gas power in keeping the system balanced and Britain’s energy secure, especially during periods of high demand. Looking beyond this winter, we must focus on the infrastructure that keeps us connected. Continued investment in our network is essential to ensure our pipes and compressors remain reliable, resilient, and fit for the future. As the energy landscape continues to shift, our focus remains on securing Britain’s energy. Thank you to the teams across National Gas who’ve contributed to this important work, and to everyone on the ground who delivered 100% network reliability over the past year and will be working tirelessly throughout winter to keep Britain powered.

From October 1 2025, the UK saw a 2% rise in the energy price cap, as set out by Ofgem. The main cause of this rise is changes in the global wholesale market. While this cap applies to domestic customers, businesses aren’t immune. Volatility in wholesale prices can ripple through supply chains, influence operational costs, and shape broader pricing trends, all of which affect the bottom line. At TEAM, we help organisations prepare for these changes. For weekly insights into wholesale pricing and market movements, explore our Wholesale Market Review, updated every Monday. https://lnkd.in/exqg2Z4z #EnergyConsulting #WholesaleEnergy #UKBusiness #EnergyMarket #Ofgem #EnergyStrategy #Sustainability

Recently the government shared an update regarding the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS). Energy costs have been and remain a strategic issue for UK businesses as costs have been very high when compared to comparable European economies. First announced in June last year, schemes like the BICS will bring meaningful relief for eligible manufacturers. For businesses outside the relief schemes, proactive energy strategy is now essential. Read TEAM (Energy Auditing Agency Ltd.)'s market briefing to see if you are eligible for lower costs: https://lnkd.in/dfe6YRWU #BusinessEnergy #EnergyManagement #BICS #UKIndustry #EnergyStrategy
