Today I had the privilege of delivering the keynote at The Business Conference of the South West, TheBusinessDesk.com where the focus was clear: building thriving, resilient businesses for tomorrow. But thriving businesses don’t just emerge from strategy decks and growth forecasts. They are built or limited by the talent we choose to see, develop and trust. In my keynote, “Beyond the Business Case: Why True Diversity in Leadership Demands More,” I posed a question that still lingers: If the data is so clear, why are we still having this conversation? We know diverse leadership teams outperform. We know they strengthen innovation, risk management and employee engagement. And yet too often, diversity is still treated as a reputational exercise rather than a growth strategy. Here in the South West, we’re ambitious. We talk about scaling, productivity, innovation, and global reach. But we cannot build resilient businesses for tomorrow while leaving talent on the table today. The real barrier isn’t capability. It’s access. It’s sponsorship. It’s belief. Too many organisations are talking about skills shortages while overlooking capable, ready talent already within their reach. When we have to continually prove that diversity 'works,' we're already accepting a flawed premise. Think about it. We don't require white men to prove they'll be profitable additions to the board. We don't demand that they demonstrate their 'business case' before being appointed. Yet we ask women, people of colour, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals to justify their presence with data, with studies, with proof. If we only value diversity when it's 'proven' to increase profits, we've already lost the plot. Because diversity is not an initiative, it is a talent strategy. Resilient businesses don’t just respond to disruption. They anticipate it. They adapt faster. They draw from broader perspectives when making high-stakes decisions. That only happens when leadership teams reflect the society and markets they serve and when inclusion is embedded as a talent strategy, not bolted on as an initiative. The South West has the opportunity to lead here. To build businesses that are not just profitable, but future-proof. Not just growing, but sustainable. Not just hiring talent, but truly unlocking it. So the question I left the room with was this: What growth are you missing because your leadership team thinks the same way? What innovation is stalled because the right voices never make it into the room? And what is the cost of inaction? Because the organisations that unlock diverse talent won’t just do better ethically. They will outperform commercially. And in a competitive, fast-changing economy — that’s the advantage that matters. It feels like *quite* a while ago when we teamed up with Robert Buckland and TheBusinessDesk.com to launch our first ever Bristol Women in Business Awards. Having Rob, editor TBD South West, and the wider team on board has been instrumental in the success of the evening - with our amazing sponsors on board and only a few tickets for the evening left, it's been a great partnership. Rob is also part of our esteemed judging panel, who have had the unenviable task of choosing our winners! Rob Buckland said: "We are proud to partner with Bristol Women in Business Charter for these inaugural awards – a major step forward for inclusion in the region. “This collaboration reflects Bristol’s energy and ambition as a business community, and its determination to lead the way in equity and inclusion. “It’s an opportunity for businesses across the region to shine a spotlight on the talent, innovation and leadership shaping our city’s future.” Massive thanks also to our amazing sponsors for ensuring this can all happen! International Day of Women and Girls in Science 🔬 Yesterday marked International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In a city like Bristol, home to world-leading aerospace, tech, robotics, life sciences and outstanding universities, science and innovation are part of our identity. Women across our region are driving breakthroughs in engineering, launching tech start-ups, leading research teams, advancing climate solutions, and shaping the future of health and digital industries. Yet despite this progress, women and girls remain underrepresented across many STEM sectors, particularly at senior levels, in high-growth tech, and in investment-backed ventures. For Bristol to remain a truly world-class innovation city, inclusion cannot be optional. At the Bristol Women in Business Charter, we believe that representation matters everywhere decisions are made, from boardrooms to laboratories, from funding panels to founder networks. Diverse leadership drives better ideas, stronger businesses, and a more resilient regional economy. This week is a reminder to: • Encourage girls across Bristol and the South West to pursue STEM with confidence • Support women progressing into senior technical and leadership roles • Back women-led innovation with visibility, sponsorship and investment • Build workplace cultures where talent thrives without bias Progress takes intention, and collaboration across business, education and civic leadership. To the women and girls shaping science and innovation in Bristol: we celebrate your impact and remain committed to accelerating equity across our business community. #WomenInScience #IWDGS2026 #BristolWomenInBusiness #STEM #BristolTech #InclusiveInnovation Sandra Gordon Sonia Cohen Sarah Rice Kristal McNamara Laura C Aiken Nick Sturge MBE James Durie Jess Woodsford Anita Sawhney Bianca Jones CIPD Emma Fry Emilie Culwick Helen Farmer Serrie Chapman
