  • Take a look at Mike Devers fantastic explanation of how a Gaussian Splat is actually made.

Splat School #2: From the real world to a flying 3D space. Here's how a Gaussian Splat is actually made. Last post I explained what a Gaussian Splat is. Now let's talk about how one gets built, because it's genuinely fascinating. Before a single Gaussian Splat can be placed, the software needs a starting map of the space. A rough 3D skeleton to work from. That skeleton is called a point cloud - millions of individual 3D coordinates describing where surfaces exist in space. Think of it as a dot-to-dot drawing of reality, before anyone joins the dots. How you create that point cloud depends on the tools you're using. There are two main routes. SfM - Walk around your space and photograph it from every angle. A process called Structure from Motion analyses those photos, finds thousands of matching features across images such as a crack in a wall, the corner of a table, and uses those matches to work out exactly where the camera was for each shot. The result is two things the software needs: a rough 3D map of the space, and the precise position of every camera that captured it. Accessible, flexible, and increasingly capable. LiDAR - Some professional systems take a different approach. Instead of deriving depth from photographs, they measure it directly, firing rapid pulses of laser light and recording how long each pulse takes to bounce back. Faster, more geometrically reliable, and independent of lighting conditions. This is how products like the XGRIDS #PortalCam work. LiDAR, cameras, and IMU work together through multi-SLAM fusion to build the point cloud directly from the capture with no photography-derived inference required. The camera imagery then adds the colour and texture that makes the final model photorealistic. Then the magic happens, regardless of which route got you here. Using the point cloud as a scaffold, software begins placing Gaussian splats across the scene, then optimises by comparing rendered viewpoints against the original photographic data, adjusting and refining, cloning some splats, splitting others, and pruning the ones that don't contribute. By the end, the model has learned to reproduce the scene from any viewpoint, not because it was told what the room looks like, but because it worked it out. The finished model can be viewed in real-time, shared online, or used as the basis for cinematic flythrough video with tools such as Veesus Ltd. #Arena4d. The point cloud is the seed. The Gaussian Splat is what grows from it.
