A celebratory night, but one with a serious message - that universities are a unique national asset that must be nurtured not derided. Among those marking the success of universities and colleges at the Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Education (formerly Queen's Anniversary Prizes) in London's Guildhall last night was the former MI5 director Eliza Manningham-Buller, who spoke up robustly in support of institutions - including higher education institutions - at a time when they are frequently under attack. Equally strong in his support was Sir Damon Buffini, the outgoing chair of the The Royal Anniversary Trust who has had a stellar career in finance (including as head of Permira) and provided stalwart support to key national institutions, including as a board member of the BBC and the Wellcome Trust. He talked about growing up in a single-parent home in Leicester, and receiving a "ticket" to the opportunities he has had throughout his life thanks to an education that took him from grammar school to the University of Cambridge and to Harvard University. It was a pleasure to join Times Higher Education's editor Chris Havergal talking with sector champions including William Hague, Heidi Johansen-Berg and Alistair Burt about the enormous impact of the University of Oxford and Lancaster University, as well as the challenges they face globally and locally. But most of all, it was an honour to be in the room with people from across the 19 universities and colleges to receive awards from King Charles for their fantastic achievements across all sorts of areas of activity.
