Harvest 2025: Is this England’s finest ever vintage?
Across the country, vines have been heavy with some of the very best fruit this country has ever seen. In our North Kent Downs vineyard, harvest is in full swing, but there’s no resting until the last grape is in.
But so far, they are looking like absolute beauties. Clean, ripe, balanced.
After the challenges of 2024, 2025 has been a delight: a hot, steady growing season, even flowering, and low disease pressure. What every grower dreams of (if they manage to get any sleep in the lead up to harvest).
This is of course still England, so September brought rain - but by then, much of the work was done. With fruit this healthy and rapid ripening, we took the time to leave them on vine a little longer to develop flavour and texture.
We saw similar things here in 2018. That’s when Pinots bring juicy red fruits and softer tannins, and Bacchus tips into riper, more aromatic styles. 2025 has the same hallmarks. Not every vineyard will get there, but the potential for still wines is especially exciting.
So, the foundations have been set for the making of world-class English wine.
A few weeks ago, Nyetimber's Blanc de Blancs 2016 was crowned the best in the world - beating Champagne for the first time. A milestone for the entire English wine sector. So, the quality here is already undeniable, but this vintage really is shaping up to be a doozy.
