Africa’s smart water future is already being shaped through collaboration, innovation, and practical action on the ground. This conversation with Siya Bashe (City of Cape Town) explores what it will take to future-proof water services across Africa. Drawing on lessons from Cape Town’s journey after the 2015–2018 drought, She shares why collaboration between utilities, investors, development banks, and technology partners is essential for scaling smart water solutions that are practical, resilient, and built for local realities. The interview also highlights a major shift happening across the sector which is that utilities are moving beyond conversations about why digital transformation matters and focusing on how to implement and scale it effectively. You’ll also see her perspective on the growing momentum behind the SWAN Africa Alliance, the importance of knowledge sharing across the continent, and why the next generation of water leaders will play a critical role in shaping Africa’s smart water future. What happens when you bring utilities and digital leaders together without the usual slide decks? The SWAN Amsterdam UnConference proved how powerful collaborative conversations can be. From “big brain voting” and challenge mapping to solution prototyping, the conversations focused on how we can better connect data, people, and decision-making across the water sector. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed ideas, insights, and real-world experiences, and to Arup for hosting us. Now… onto the networking reception 🍻 InfoTiles Digital Water, Erik Nobbe, Tico Michels, Shirley Ben-Dak, PMP, Zolboo Dashmyagmar
