About us
Sutherland Labs combine research tools and design thinking to make everyday experiences better. Our explorers of the everyday include researchers, strategists, designers and technologists, and are united by a shared fascination with human behavior and a relentless curiosity that drives us to discover, design and realize solutions for the puzzles that frustrate everyone else. While our search for answers may start and end with the customer – mapping their conscious and unspoken needs, and considering how both are likely to change over time – we never lose sight of the client’s wider world. Marketplace feasibility, technological realities and business needs remain priorities throughout the life of every project. This is why we work with some of the world's brightest brands, untying tricky knot in a range of industries, and helping them anticipate a future full of change, uncertainty and possibility.

"In a subscription economy, loyalty is reset and reevaluated with every billing cycle." We've entered an era where a single pricing change, a shift in terms of service, or a drop in perceived value is enough to send customers elsewhere. Not because they're disloyal, but because SaaS has fundamentally changed the rules of the game. This is the Loyalty Threshold: the point at which accumulated friction outweighs perceived value. And most brands don't see it coming until it's too late. In our latest article, Principal Design Researcher Laura Donohue explores this shift through some striking real-world examples, and asks a pointed question: if you have churn data but don't know why it's happening, are you really in control of your product's future? What's the difference between a game people finish and one they abandon after 20 minutes? Often, it comes down to what was discovered or missed during research and testing. Players who are new to a game highlight issues that the studio simply hadn't noticed. The earlier those insights surface, the better the outcome. At Sutherland Labs, our games research goes beyond whether something works. We explore how a game feels, where players hit the frustration curve, where they lose interest, and where the experience truly clicks. Whether it's playtesting a prototype, exploring player behaviour in context, or understanding what keeps people coming back, we bring the same rigour to games research as we do to any complex user experience. Curious about how your players really experience your game? Let's talk. https://lnkd.in/ewHSJDTa #GamesResearch #UXResearch #GameDevelopment #PlayerExperience #Playtesting #GamesUX

How do you build a product that works for every type of restaurateur? With a major platform migration approaching, a leading restaurant management company needed to know which features their customers actually relied on, and where the experience was creating friction. We ran contextual research with restaurant owners and managers across the UK, uncovering not just what they did, but why. The insight helped the product team prioritise their migration around real customer needs, not assumptions. Why test in high fidelity? Because sometimes low fidelity is not enough. Early prototypes are useful to validate flows and concepts. But when products depend on trust, perception, emotion or visual detail, low-fidelity testing can miss critical reactions. In this article, Fri Rasyidi, Lead Consultant at Somia Customer Experience, explores when high-fidelity prototypes become essential to understand how people truly experience a product. 🧠 Key reflections: • Visual polish influences trust and credibility • Realistic interactions create more accurate feedback • Some usability issues only emerge in near-final experiences • Fidelity affects emotional and behavioural responses Testing fidelity should match the decisions at stake. Because what users feel is often as important as what they do. Designing a global news service means understanding how people consume news locally. The BBC wanted to extend the reach of their Indian language services, having launched websites in Marathi and Punjabi. To do that, they needed to understand how people in these regions actually engage with news ; their habits, motivations, and barriers. Working with local partner PeepalDesign we conducted diary studies, in-context research, and prototype testing in Delhi and Mumbai. We then extended the research to Indonesia. As the BBC World Service team put it: "The value of getting input from our users — wherever in the world they are — is clear. It helps us to put the user at the heart of the work we do." Our insights directly informed the redesign of the BBC World Service website.
