Many children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) have a strong understanding of language but find it difficult to express themselves or organise their thoughts into spoken language. Because these needs are not always obvious, they can sometimes be misinterpreted as disengagement or behavioural difficulty. Early identification and targeted support are essential in ensuring children are understood and can fully participate in learning, social interaction, and daily life. #SLCo #SLCN #SpeechAndLanguage #SEND #EarlyHelp #Education #Inclusion

One effective communication strategy for supporting children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) is to reduce the number of questions we ask and increase the number of comments we make during interactions. Frequent questioning can unintentionally increase pressure and cognitive demand. In contrast, commenting provides children with accessible language models while allowing them time and space to process communication without the expectation of an immediate response. For example: • “You’re concentrating really carefully.” • “That car is moving very fast.” • “You’ve built a very tall tower.” This approach can support confidence, engagement, language development, and more spontaneous communication. Often, small adjustments in adult communication style can have a significant impact on participation and inclusion for children with SLCN. #SLCN #SLCo #SpeechAndLanguage #SEND #LanguageDevelopment

🏅 Congratulations to Kenneth, one of our Edinburgh Youth Club Assistants, on completing his very first marathon in support of SLCo! What an incredible achievement! We’re so proud to have team members who inspire our young people to believe in themselves, challenge their limits, and aim high. Please join us in congratulating him on this fantastic accomplishment 👏 #SLCo #YouthClub #SLCN #Inspiration

💙 Supporting Teenagers with SLCN Teenagers with SLCN may communicate more openly when conversations happen alongside shared activities rather than through direct questioning. Walking, creative activities or informal side-by-side interactions can help reduce communication pressure and support more natural connection. For professionals working across education, health and SEND, small adjustments in communication approaches can have a significant impact on a young person’s confidence, emotional wellbeing and engagement. #SLCN #SEND #Teenagers #SpeechAndLanguage #CommunicationMatters #ChildrensMentalHealth #Inclusion #SLCo

Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (#SLCN) are often misunderstood because their difficulties are not always immediately visible. What may appear to be shyness, distraction, disengagement, or challenging behaviour can actually be a child struggling to understand language or communicate effectively. For professionals working in education, healthcare, early years, and community settings, recognising these early signs is vital. Early identification and communication-supportive environments can significantly improve children’s confidence, participation, wellbeing, and long-term outcomes. #SLCN #SLCo #EarlyIntervention #SEND #SpeechAndLanguage #Inclusion #Education #CommunicationMatters

✖ Myth: “They’re just shy.” ✔ Fact: Shyness and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) are not the same thing. Children with SLCN may experience difficulties understanding language, processing information, expressing themselves, or participating in conversations. These challenges can sometimes be mistaken for shyness or disengagement. Early identification and appropriate support can make a significant difference to a child’s confidence, learning, and long-term outcomes. Creating communication-supportive environments in schools, healthcare settings, and communities helps children feel understood and able to participate. #SLCN #SLCo #SEND #SpeechAndLanguage #Inclusion #Education #ChildDevelopment

💙 Mental Health Awareness Week Young people with SLCN are often at increased risk of social isolation, particularly during the teenage years when communication and peer relationships become more complex. For professionals across education, health and SEND, creating communication-friendly environments can play a vital role in supporting belonging, confidence and emotional wellbeing. Small adjustments — such as allowing extra time, reducing communication pressure and supporting peer understanding — can have a lasting impact on a young person’s mental health. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #SLCN #SEND #SpeechAndLanguage #ChildrensMentalHealth #Inclusion #CommunicationMatters #SLCo
