𝟯 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟰 Starting July 24, 2026, acquirers must open a formal investigation within 72 hours when any of these thresholds are crossed. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 1️⃣ Combined chargeback + refund rate: 5% This one hits new merchants hardest. If all of these apply to you: • Less than six months of Mastercard acceptance history • More than 5% of transactions resulting in chargebacks or refunds (combined) over any rolling 30-day window • At least 500 transactions • Your acquirer has to investigate. Subscription businesses are especially exposed. Failed cancellations, trial-to-paid disputes, recurring charge confusion – all count toward that 5%. 2️⃣ Authorization approval rate: the 50-point drop Auth rate falls 50+ percentage points within 72 hours – say, from 90% to 40%? That's a trigger. Same goes for any drop below 30% absolute, with at least 25 transactions in the window. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲: legitimate auth drops happen. New market expansion, processor outages, seasonal spikes. Mastercard doesn't distinguish intent. It flags the pattern first. 3️⃣ Issuer fraud reports: 2 issuers is the threshold Two different issuers reporting at least one transaction each as a scam (fraud type 56 – manipulation of cardholder) triggers the investigation. Applies to merchants with less than six months of Mastercard history. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗼 𝗗𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟰 → Track your combined chargeback + refund rate daily, not monthly. → Sign up for products like Consumer Clarity to be able to deflect chargebacks without issuing refunds. → Clean up your checkout: clear product descriptions, visible refund policies, transparent billing descriptors. → Keep your auth rate stable: test new markets with small volumes; communicate planned changes to your acquirer. → Talk to your acquirer now, not after you're flagged.
