One in 78 children in English schools is currently classed as homeless, the highest level since 2004. Many of these children live in temporary accommodation that is often unsuitable, including single-room units such as B&Bs or hotels. The impact on their education, wellbeing, and life chances is significant. New research from Shelter highlights the daily reality: • 92% of teachers report homeless children arrive at school tired • 71% arrive in unclean or inadequate clothing • 52% miss school due to their housing situation, with 37% missing over a month • Almost 50% have had to move schools, losing friends and social connections For children, a "home" isn't just a roof, it’s the foundation for their concentration, attendance, and future life chances. These disruptions are particularly acute for neurodivergent children who rely on stability and routine to thrive. 💡 Demand for temporary and affordable housing continues to outpace available public funding, raising questions about how delivery can be scaled.
