We’re launching a landmark report looking at Scotland's quantum ecosystem and its place in the global quantum economy. Learn how Scotland has built one of the world's top five quantum clusters and how it can maintain its strategic edge. We’re privileged to be joined by an exciting line up of speakers: Richard Lochhead will share some insights into the growth of the Scottish quantum ecosystem from his time in government; Technology Scotland will look at the role of co-ordination and the Scottish technology supercluster; and Fraunhofer UK Research Ltd Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) will share some thoughts on bridging research and industry. We’ll hear from the National Quantum Hubs with a presence in Scotland including QEPNT - UK Hub for Quantum Enabled Position, Navigation & Timing, #IQN, QuSIT - UK Quantum Technology Research Hub in Sensing, Imaging and Timing. There will be flash presentations from Scottish companies in quantum and across the supply chain including Quantcore, Kelvin Quantum, Quantatrace, BrainDynamics, Inc., Photon Force, Qinara and others. 🎓 Scotland’s spinout potential is gaining global attention. In this piece for DIGIT.FYI, our Investment Manager Elizabeth Young explores why Scotland and the North of the UK have the research depth, technical talent and deeptech potential to build world-leading university spinouts. The top 10 northern universities account for 40% of the UK’s research power in the science and engineering disciplines that underpin deeptech, commanding 12% more research intensity than the five renowned Golden Triangle universities. 👎 Unfortunately, the regional equity gap persists. Northern spinouts attract only 11% of UK venture despite contributing almost four times that to the country’s research output. The median age at which a Scottish company reaches its first institutional fundraise is also roughly double that of a London-based equivalent. 👀 However, investors have noticed this gap and the window is closing. Spinouts like Quantcore from the University of Glasgow are bucking the trend and setting an example for other Scottish spinouts. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic evening hosted by Venture Café in Edinburgh, focused on the provocatice question: “To be (the CEO) or not to be?” 🤔 The discussion brought together entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, and business leaders to explore one of the key challenges for scaling companies - whether founders should remain in the CEO role or bring in external commercial leadership as the business grows. One of the strongest themes throughout the evening was the importance of strong team chemistry, good dynamics, big ambition, and a clear long-term vision in driving a company forward. It was also repeatedly highlighted that commercial leadership roles benefit greatly from having a strong high-level technical understanding of the technology behind the business, helping them identify market opportunities, build credibility, and drive commercial growth. Was fantastic to see Shahida Imani from Singular Photonics - one of our Technology Scotland members - sharing her perspective as a panelist 😊 It was also good to hear organisations from our network, including Neuranics and Quantcore, highlighted during the discussion as strong examples of successful leadership structures and team dynamics 💪 Great evening with excellent conversations and networking across Scotland’s entrepreneurial and deep tech community.

UK Quantum Hackathon 2026: Call for use case submissions We’re excited to announce that use case submissions are now open for this year’s UK Quantum Hackathon, taking place at the University of Warwick from 18 - 20 August 2026. As part of the NQCC’s SparQ programme, the hackathon brings together students and early-career researchers with industry mentors to: - Explore real-world quantum computing applications - Gain hands-on experience with quantum algorithms and coding - Build connections across academia, industry, and the public sector We invite organisations from industry, government, the public and third sectors, and higher education to submit impactful use case ideas to tackle real-world challenges. Selected entrants will have the opportunity to work closely with a team at the event, providing mentorship to develop a solution aligned to their use case.
