PrOH Modelling Methodology

A definitive source on PrOH Modelling Methodology
About us
‘PrOH’ Modelling is an abbreviation for ‘Process Oriented Holonic’ Modelling. ‘PrOH’ is pronounced ‘pro’ with a silent ‘h’ and rhymes with ‘show’ as in ‘show and tell’. PrOH Modelling is a type of soft systems methodology developed by 𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, that is used to enquire into and improve complex systemic organizational process problems. As a soft systems methodology PrOH Modelling emphasizes understanding, definition, consensus building and action taking to solve problems. It is particularly useful in processes that are dependent on lots of human activity and decision making, have a high degree of subjectivity and have numerous different stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and opinions. PrOH Modelling is best used in an action research or intervention based context where a researcher is an active participant in organizational strategy and operations and is able to maintain an independent and objective perspective.

Many digitalisation efforts fail because organisations focus on technology without addressing how partners, decisions, and incentives connect. In this aerospace supply chain project, PrOH Modelling helped identify non-technical barriers to digital adoption and align organisations around shared priorities. The same systems thinking approach applies well beyond aerospace. 👉 Read the full case study on our website. Many operational improvements fall short because organisations focus on isolated fixes rather than how decisions, data, and people connect across the system. In this project with Higgs LLP, PrOH Modelling was used to make end-to-end legal processes visible, reduce manual effort, and support faster, more consistent decision-making across teams. The learning from this work is not limited to legal services. Any organisation managing complex workflows can apply the same systems thinking approach. 👉 Read the full case study on our website. Most lean initiatives struggle because teams optimise parts of the organisation without seeing how everything connects. In this project with Metal Assemblies Ltd, PrOH Modelling was used to make the whole system visible, align perspectives across roles, and support better decision-making, not just isolated improvements. The project was awarded the top category of 'Outstanding' by its funding body, Innovate UK. 👉 Read the full case study on our website. Businesses and entrepreneurs across the region are being invited to learn more about how a unique methodology developed by academics at Aston University can improve decision making in both the manufacturing and professional service sectors. Developed by Dr Ben Clegg and Dr Krishna Chaitanya Balthu from Aston Business School, Process Oriented Holonic (PrOH) Modelling uses simple rules and guidelines that can be used by companies to investigate and improve complex systemic organisational process problems. By combining how an organisation thinks about people, process and technology in a systems perspective, it allows organisations an opportunity to shape and create what future digital systems might look like. To register for a ticket, please book here: https://lnkd.in/eWzaNs3x The definitive book on PrOH Modelling by Ben Clegg and Krishna Balthu, ‘Systems Thinking and Action Research for Innovation’, is available now to pre-order for April 2026 on amazon.co.uk. ᴏɴᴇ ᴘʀᴏʙʟᴇᴍ. ᴍᴀɴʏ ɪɴᴛᴇʀᴘʀᴇᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴꜱ. ᴢᴇʀᴏ ᴘʀᴏɢʀᴇꜱꜱ. In complex organisations, the problem is rarely objective. When stakeholders see the same issue differently, progress stalls and decisions become risky. What looks like a technical issue is often a deeper systemic misalignment. PrOH Modelling, helps organisations make these invisible perspectives visible through structured engagement of people and allowing them to reflect on their work and organisational processes. It supports teams to: ✅Expose divergent views before they turn into conflict ✅Build consensus around what the real challenge is ✅Enable risk aware decision making before resources are committed
