On the 3rd of June I'm at #PBIBRUM talking all things Deneb. Getting the talk ready, I went back through my old cheat sheets. Some of them were fine. But I kept reaching for references that didn't exist in one place. So I built a new one. Here's what it covers: The 3 required blocks every Deneb spec needs: data, mark, and encoding All the mark types, including composites like boxplot and errorband The 4 field mapping types and when to use each Sorting, formatting with Power BI format strings, and tooltip configuration Layers and how shared encoding cascades between them View composition: layer, concat, facet, and repeat Conditions and if-then-else expressions Power BI theme colour integrations (pbiColor, pbiColorLinear, pbiColorDivergent) Transforms, params, widgets, templates, and linked charts The circular chart arc properties that I always end up Googling. I built a Power BI MCP Skill that auto-documents your DAX measures in plain English. Last week, I attended the PBI Brum Power BI meetup, where Tristan Mobbs delivered a fascinating session on the Power BI MCP server. I left curious. Like REALLY curious. I learn best by doing, so instead of reading about it, I threw myself straight in and built something I’d actually find useful. A couple of hours later, I had a working AI skill that connects directly to a live Power BI desktop file and automatically documents every DAX measure in plain English, complete with a business impact statement and a summary for each one. The magic: No prompt engineering. No copy/paste. No manual documentation. Just Claude reading the model and generating output like in the screenshots. The Stack: ✅ Power BI Desktop ✅ VS Code & Power BI Modelling MCP Extension ✅ Claude Code ✅ A skill file I wrote myself For this exercise, I used the Store Sales.pbix from the Microsoft Power BI Desktop Samples GitHub. I’ve open‑sourced the skill files so anyone can try this themselves: https://lnkd.in/e-PfXh5y Feel free to fork, adapt, or extend them, and if you improve them, i’d genuinely love to see what you build. There’s also a second MCP Skill in the repo - a performance analyser that applies rule‑based checks to your model (DAX patterns, relationship health, cardinality risks, etc). The first run already produced a detailed audit summary. It’s a foundation, not a finished product, so if you want to evolve it, enhance it, or create your own version, go for it. If you’re a Power BI developer, do yourself a favour and go to your next local meetup. You never know what a couple of hours of curiosity can turn into.
