    Have you ever had anyone tell you to be more "solution-oriented"? It's a phrase I hear all the time and, like many of life's delights, it's great, but also terrible in an equal measure. A lot of the companies we work with here at Pay As You Go COO come to us because they're struggling to find Product-Market Fit and, honestly, it's often precisely because they've spent too long being solution-oriented. Solution-orientation is great when you've got a fully identified and broken down problem statement to be addressing. Until that point, you're going to want to be VERY problem-oriented. Product-Market Fit doesn't come from building a great product. It comes from finding a great problem to solve. If you build something that's great but that no-one cares about, you don't have a product, you have a project. And projects can be fun, but they're not inherently lucrative. If you can find a problem that's robust - i.e. that shows up in the lives of your customers in a way that's significant enough for them to pay you an amount of money to fix it that has potential for a healthy profit margin - you're on the way to finding Product-Market Fit way before you've even started developing your solution.     You know what my absolute favourite thing in the world is? Secret bus driver waves. You know when you sit on the top deck of the bus and you can see your bus approaching another bus that's on the same number route but going the other way and you see that bus's driver wave to your bus's driver? I don't know why it brings me so much joy, but it really, really does. I feel like I've been let into the secret world that keeps London running whilst we all flap around complaining about tourists walking too slowly. Sadly, I wasn't able to build a functioning business off the back of a love for secret bus driver waves, so I had to build it off the back of a love for my second favourite thing in the world - Strategy. I absolutely love Strategy. I love meeting an organisation, hearing how chaotic and stressed everything is, and then fixing it all - making it all smooth and easy and focussed - just by improving their Strategy. Every conversation I have about a potential client's business problems can be brought back to improvements that need to be made in their Strategy. Whether it's the fact that they're not hitting their goals, or they're struggling to prioritise their work, or their team are disillusioned and quitting - it's all Strategy. Poorly designed Strategy, poorly implemented Strategy, poorly communicated Strategy. Strategy, Strategy, Strategy. I love it so much I made holographic laptop stickers about it. (Honestly, having adult money to buy all the joyful things you couldn't have as a kid is the BEST).     IT'S NOT THERAPY. This is always the first thing I say when people ask me what I cover with my Business Coaching clients. It's definitely not therapy. I'm very much not a therapist. I cannot convey strongly enough how much I don't have a handle on my own emotions, let alone the capacity to get you a handle on yours. What I do know, however, is how to run a business. Even when (possibly especially when) the world is falling apart around us all, I'm very good at staying on track, focussing back in on the metrics that matter, and prioritising the heck out of anything that moves or makes a sound.     Sometimes, to move forwards you have to go back. Way back. Like back to the problem statement back. We work with a lot of businesses that are really struggling with the classic symptoms of a lack of operational efficiency - lost revenue, poor retention (of both customers and employees), an endless to-do list that never seems to make any difference not matter how much of it you tick off. It's miserable. Utterly, utterly miserable. Often, the founders and operators that we're working with are too far along the path and too lost in the weeds to easily fix the problem and the first thing we recommend is pausing, taking a breath and going right back to the start. We ask "What problem are you actually solving for customers?", then we ask "Who are those customers?", then we ask "How are we solving this for them?". It sounds so simple when you look at it here, but it's so hard to make a start on when you're lost in the chaos. We use really simple frameworks to guide our customers and by the time we're finished, the path to revenue seems a lot more clear, it's easier to see why customers and employees would stick around, and the to-do list has a beginning, a middle, and, most importantly for their sanity, an end.   • Less of a beach read than the sci-fi novel, sure, but infinitely more deductible and that's really what makes for an exciting book in our world...

    About 75% of the books we sell at Pay As You Go COO are copies of How To Write Your Strategy. It's the first business book I wrote (interestingly, not the first book overall that I wrote, but it'll be a cold day in hell before you find me promoting the excruciating teenage sci-fi fantasy novel I wrote at 21) and it's definitely my favourite child.     When I was first thinking about Pay As You Go COO's services, I did what I always do when I'm trying to noodle something out. I sat down and I wrote. I wrote about the problem (lots of companies fail and they don't realise why they're failing until it's too late), I wrote about how much it sucks (a lot), and I wrote about the solution (spending a bit more time upfront on Strategy and Operations to make sure that all the future efforts are delivering what they need to).     It's a sad fact that most businesses will fail. For me, it's an even sadder fact that most of those failures are due to things that can be easily fixed with good Strategic and Operational foundations. A lot of companies come to Pay As You Go COO thinking that it's really expensive to work with a good COO. And they're partly right - it's really expensive to work with a good COO if you want them full time. But often you don't need them that much, you just need help in the moment, for a moment.     At Pay As You Go COO, we coach executives, but we're not 'Exec Coaches'. I like to make this distinction very clear when people ask me about what I and Pay As You Go COO do for clients. We offer Business Coaching services, but Business Coaching isn't Exec Coaching. While both drive growth, the focus and approach differs. Exec Coaching is generally a guided reflection to help you find the broader patterns and uncover the answers for yourself as you develop as an effective leader over the long term. With our hourly service, on the other hand, you're basically renting a COO for 60 minutes. We can absolutely ask you questions and help you figure answers out, but also we can just give you the answers if that's what you want. Exec Coaching helps you become better over the long term; we help you make sure there's a long term to even have to worry about at all.     There's been a lot of chat on LinkedIn lately about the suppression of women's voices. To counteract this, women are changing their gender to 'male' and seeing their impressions shoot up and the comments sections are UNHINGED. One comment I've seen a few times is that it's okay that men get more impressions than women because there are a lot of men out there who are sharing women's experiences so it doesn't matter that the women themselves are being suppressed. Don't get me wrong, I think it's fantastic that there are male allies supporting women, just like I think it's fantastic that there are female allies supporting men. But men can only observe our experiences through their own lenses, and their interpretations of our experiences aren't our experiences. We need to be able to speak for ourselves. Hopefully, you can read that sentence and think "Yeah, that's legit, everyone should be able to speak for themselves."
