In an incredibly rare procedure, Lucy’s womb – with her baby inside - was taken out of her body so that her surgical team could treat her ovarian cancer, with her baby not yet born... Lucy was 12 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with cancer. Doctor Soleymani and his team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust suspected that if they waited until the baby was born before treating Lucy’s condition, there would be an increased risk to her and her baby’s life. Her womb was kept wrapped in a warm, sterile saline pack to mimic being inside the body and to keep it at the right temperature, and then placed back into position. Three months later, baby Raffy was born. Across the NHS, unbelievable procedures like this take place every day thanks to the incredible skills and hard work of our staff. Look how cute baby Raffy is! 💙
