Innovation drives growth and improves lives. The iiCON: Infection Innovation Consortium in #Liverpool is a shining example. Established and led by the wonderful Prof Janet Hemingway, iiCON powers investment and innovation in leading-edge anti-infection R&D. I was privileged to witness two impressive practical examples there this week: 🔬 pioneering sensor technology from Prof. Patryk Kot, developing groundbreaking new diagnostic products for insecticides, infectious diseases & non-healing wounds for military personnel 🧬 UK’s first robotic laboratory for high-risk pathogens at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with thanks to Dr Michael Egan If time had allowed, I could have seen other examples too e.g. on Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) & pneumococcal vaccines for Malawi. The health and welfare benefits are clear & compelling, and so are the economic ones – e.g. 553 SMEs work with iiCON, over £1bn R&D activity has been unlocked through it, 36 new products delivered, 195 contracts signed, 941 organisations in iiCON’s global network – 132 with a presence in the Merseyside region and a further 104 in North-West England. There’s a strong entrepreneurship angle too. We went on to see Lorna Green, CEO of LYVA Labs, who hosted us at a pitching event at Central Tech – a key facility in Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) – for life sciences SME and start-up innovators to venture capital and angel investors. All tremendous examples of business doing well and doing good, sparked by innovation and enabled through partnership. Great to be joined by colleagues from Department for Business and Trade and Imogen Scully from Liverpool City Region Combined Authority too. Philip Kelly Paul Evans Georgia M. LYVA Labs was delighted to be part of this programme 🌟 We had an enormously positive experience working with iiCON to support our project, which explored and mapped the microbiome innovation ecosystem in Liverpool City Region - helping to highlight the breadth and depth of expertise that exists in our region.
