About us

Emerald Publishing is a global academic publisher of research with a clear purpose: to publish and advance knowledge that has real‑world impact. Founded in 1967, Emerald has spent nearly 60 years championing research that serves society, not just scholarship. From day one we've done things differently - by focussing on usable knowledge, amplifying voices and breaking barriers, especially for those beyond elite circles. Our mission has always been clear: research should drive change in classrooms, boardrooms, and communities. That vision - measuring success in lives changed, policies influenced, and challenges addressed - still defines us today.

  • What does responsible publishing look like in practice? Our new report sets out what we've done in 2025 to support a fairer and sustainable research ecosystem.  In a period of growing pressure on equality, sustainability and academic freedom, we’ve chosen to be clear about what we stand for. The report brings together our progress across our 3Ps: Planet, People, and Prosperity. These pillars set out how we reduce our environmental impact, put inclusion and wellbeing at the heart of our work, and widen access to knowledge to support communities and society. The report also outlines how we backed our support for #DefendResearch with practical action, including a publisher’s note across all 313 journals.  Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/4ceaIhE

  • Just published: Being Human – How to Thrive in an Ideas-Informed Future Ideas have always shaped how societies think, decide and act. In Being Human, Chris Brown and Ruth Luzmore introduce the concept of an ideas-informed society: one in which citizens actively engage with new thinking to inform decision-making, policy development and collective wellbeing. Taking a practice-orientated approach, the book explores how education systems and policymakers can support more effective engagement with ideas, moving beyond narrow economic measures towards what societies truly value. It addresses contemporary and often contested issues, including the influence of social media and the growing impact of artificial intelligence, situating these debates within a broader vision for a happier, healthier and more fulfilled society. Written for academics, educators and policymakers, Being Human offers a timely and original contribution to discussions about how societies can better navigate complexity and uncertainty in the future. • Publishers have a role to play in protecting academic freedom. It’s ongoing work and a responsibility that can’t be ignored. A recent The Scholarly Kitchen article sets out seven actions publishers can take, prompting us to reflect on our own role. Here’s what we’ve already put in place: ▪️ Clear guidance to support responsible publishing, and safe, anonymous submission options to help protect scholars at risk ▪️ Speaking out against censorship when it threatens the integrity of research ▪️ Promoting equity by expanding access to knowledge and amplifying voices that are often overlooked ▪️ Creating spaces for learning and exchange - from #DefendResearch community events to our work with EveryLibrary. We also use data and community feedback to inform our decisions, and we’re continuing to think about how insights can better shape long‑term policy. We know we still have more to do. If you haven’t read the article yet, it’s a timely reminder of why this work matters and how publishers can take practical action. https://bit.ly/4cWXcA0

  • This study on board gender diversity and fair remuneration is research that does more than inform. It shows that when more women join company boards, the way organisations think, decide, and communicate genuinely improves. This includes: ▪️ Clearer financial information ▪️ Better questions ▪️ More accountability ▪️ And a culture where transparency becomes the norm, not the exception Authored by Paolo S., Laura Muro Royano, Ryan McWay, and Pablo San Martin Mosqueira, the paper was recognised by the Gender in Management: An International Journal editorial team in the 2025 Emerald Literati Awards for offering findings that organisations can act on right now. • Responsible management education sits at the intersection of research, practice, and real-world impact. It asks how we prepare current and future leaders to navigate ethical complexity, sustainability challenges, and rapid technological change. That’s why Emerald Publishing is working with the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) to launch two new co‑branded journals, designed to support rigorous, globally relevant scholarship in this space. The Journal of Responsible Management Education will provide a dedicated platform for research and practice focused on ethics, sustainability, responsible leadership and education aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Alongside this, Artificial Intelligence and Responsible Management will explore how AI can be applied across business disciplines in ways that are ethical, accountable and inclusive. Together, these journals reflect a shared commitment to publishing that serves educators, institutions and policymakers, and to research that helps shape more responsible organisations and societies. • If International Women’s Day feels the same every year, then not enough is changing. A single day can amplify important conversations, but it can’t, on its own, dismantle the structural inequalities embedded in our societies, the workplace and everyday experience. When organisations rely on symbolism, they risk avoiding the harder work of redistributing power, opportunity and resources.   This year, we wanted to sit with an uncomfortable truth: if nothing structurally changes in organisations and everyday decision‑making, then a single day changes very little.    That’s why our IWD message is deliberately simple: “If it feels the same every year, it is.” And why we’re borrowing a line that still lands hard: #DeedsNotWords   At Emerald, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made. From being recognised as a Times Top 50 Employer for Gender Equality to embedding equality, diversity and inclusion across our strategy and the research we publish. But we’re also clear‑eyed about where we need to do better, including closing our gender and ethnicity pay gaps and continuing to challenge structural barriers across our organisation, and the broader industry we sit within.   So today, we’re asking ourselves (and inviting others to do the same): What are we changing next, in targets, budgets, accountability, and everyday decisions, so this doesn’t feel the same next year?   #InternationalWomensDay #IWD #DeedsNotWords #Equity #Inclusion
