We are committed to the creation of a circular economy to eliminate waste, circulate products, and regenerate nature.

About us

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation was launched in 2010 to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. Since its creation the charity has emerged as a global thought leader, establishing the circular economy on the agenda of decision makers across business, government and academia. With the support of its Strategic Partners, the Foundation’s work focuses on five interlinking areas: Learning Developing the vision, skills and mindsets needed to transition to a circular economy Business and Government Catalysing circular innovation and creating the conditions for it to reach scale. Insight and Analysis Providing robust evidence about the benefits and implications of the transition Systemic Initiatives Taking a global, cross-sectoral approach to material flows, the Foundation is bringing together organisations from across value chains to tackle systemic stalemates that organisations cannot overcome in isolation. Currently running two programmes - New Plastics Economy and Make Fashion Circular. Communications Engaging a global audience around the circular economy To find out more information, visit our website http://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org

  • "The question businesses and governments should be asking is not whether we can afford a circular economy for critical minerals. It is whether we can afford not to build one — and how much competitive ground we are willing to cede while we deliberate." The Foundation’s Wen-Yu Weng has written for the World Economic Forum on why we must act now to scale the EV battery chain reliably and responsibly by creating a #circular economy for #EV batteries and #criticalminerals. By 2050, the global market share of electric vehicles is projected to reach 65 - 75%, offering huge economic and climate benefits — to unlock them, we need a circular economy. • Flexible plastic packaging accounts for around 80% of packaging entering our oceans. Paper packaging alternatives could play a role in reducing flexible packaging waste and pollution. Laura Smith, our Programme Manager for Plastics, joins this panel at Sustainability in Packaging Asia 2026 in Singapore (3–4 June) to explore what it takes for paper-based alternatives to deliver at scale. Join in person or online. ⬇️

At Sustainability in Packaging Asia 2026, this expert panel will explore practical solutions to this challenge, including:  • How can paper-based flexible packaging reduce small-format plastic pollution in high-leakage markets?  • What conditions must be in place for responsibly designed paper-based flexible packaging to deliver environmental benefits at scale?  • How can collaborative innovation accelerate progress on performance, cost, and scalability to make this a viable solution?  • and more Moderated by Sandra Dal Maso, the discussion will feature leading experts sharing practical insights. 🎤 Meet our distinguished panellists:  • @Laura Smith, Programme Manager, Plastics at Ellen MacArthur Foundation  • Kiril Dimitrov, Flexible Packaging Platform Lead at 雀巢公司é   • Richard Smith, Director Sustainability - Asia Pacific at Amcor 🎟️ Join us in Singapore or online on 3–4 June 2026. • This year’s #EUGreenWeek will spotlight the #business case for #nature, demonstrating that a #nature-positive economy is essential for #Europe’s prosperity, resilience, and competitiveness. We’re collaborating with the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Directorate and NetworkNature EU to show how the #circulareconomy can help deliver the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework, highlighting the role of #circular business models in driving #biodiversity financing. The Foundation’s Biodiversity Lead Marianne Kettunen will join #policymakers and fellow experts at this #EU Green Week event — Unlocking nature’s potential across the budget lines — taking place in Brussels on 2 June. • What would it take to turn resale and repair into a source of economic growth that uses fewer resources, produces fewer emissions, and creates more local jobs? Resale is already expanding rapidly and globally, the second-hand market now accounts for approximately 10% of all apparel spending. Yet resale and repair businesses remain structurally disadvantaged by the very tax and regulatory frameworks that govern them. A new report and business statement from the Foundation argues this can change, using existing policy frameworks and tools already within government control. On 15th June, two members of the Foundation, Valérie Boiten, Senior Policy Officer, and Miranda Beckett, Project Manager for Fashion and Textiles, will join a STICA hosted webinar and panel discussion to share more. • Scaling reuse systems is critical to tackling packaging waste and pollution and reducing reliance on finite materials. No single organisation can drive the necessary change alone. Progress depends on industry, policymakers, the financing sector, and civil society working from a shared understanding of what's needed and where the gaps are. On 18 May, at the margins of the REuse Economy Expo in Paris, we teamed up with New ERA - New European Reuse Alliance and The Pew Charitable Trusts to bring together more than 70 reuse solution providers, technical experts, and civil society representatives to identify what's still missing across the policy and implementation landscape and pin-point priority opportunities crucial to scaling reusable packaging in Europe. The participants highlighted: - Reuse systems represent an opportunity to build resilient supply chains and reduce dependence on virgin materials - Policy measures, including public procurement, taxation, and EPR, offer promising routes to accelerate scaling of reuse - Infrastructure funding remains a key barrier, requiring clearer pathways to unlock investment - Robust governance structures are needed to guide the multi-actor collaboration required for reuse systems at scale Scaling reuse won’t happen overnight. But when the right people are in the room with a clear agenda, the direction of travel becomes sharper. Continued collaborative action and collective advocacy will enable us to drive mainstream adoption of reuse systems and get the environmental and economic benefits. #Reuse #ReusablePackaging #CircularEconomy #Europe

  • Last week, we published a new report and business statement which proposes a policy mix that can help circular business models to scale. Today, circular business models like resale and repair, are caught in an economic trap. Most fashion brands and retailers are currently incentivised to use virgin materials rather than investing in processes that keep products in use for longer. But even against the headwinds, the demand for these models is clear, with the global secondhand market projected to reach USD 393B by 2030, growing 2x faster than the overall clothing market.* Governments do not need to reinvent the wheel. Modelling demonstrates that a targeted policy mix could help unlock commercial viability, raising gross profit margins up to 55% for resale and 41% for repair in Canada, the EU and US. Read our latest report to learn how targeted policy shifts can support circular business models in reaching the profit margins necessary to attract investment and scale: https://lnkd.in/dVsB647U *Thredup Resale Report 2026

  • The Postcode Lottery UK Dream Fund didn't just support our work, it gave us permission to think at the scale the problem demands. It catalysed some of our most transformative interventions — like redesigning iconic denim jeans, designing a food system with nature in mind, and creating an economy where plastics never become waste. It proved that when you back bold ideas with serious resources, systems really do change. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dDm-jEH4? #circulareconomy

  • Design decisions determine how resources are used and value is created. By embedding circular economy principles upstream, at the point where material demand, land use, and urban infrastructure are shaped, governments can influence outcomes for decades. Today we publish the second policy brief in our series building on the Universal Circular Economy Policy Goals. ‘Design it right: Make circular systems the norm’, identifies three systems at the heart of the circular transition that are ripe for redesign: products, agricultural systems, and cities. A focused mix of upstream policy instruments can reduce reliance on virgin resources, improve material circulation, and deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits. • “Businesses are increasingly seeing circular business models as not just a sustainability strategy, but a resilience strategy.” Says the Foundation’s Miranda Beckett when speaking with Sourcing Journal's Jasmin Malik Chua. Miranda spoke to Jasmin about the Foundation’s new report and business statement, launched yesterday, which explores the policy measures needed to enable circular business models to reach their full potential.
