💡Expert opinions: ‘Building smarter factories: the role of network observability in automotive manufacturing’ by Eileen Haggerty, area vice president, product & solutions at NETSCOUT. On 19th July 2024, services and industries around the world ground to a halt. The cause? A faulty automated software update issued by CrowdStrike. While widely known by security experts, the sheer impact of such an update was made painfully clear to the average person, affecting countless businesses and organisations in every sector, including automotive manufacturers. An example of this was seen with Tesla – the automotive giant had to shut down assembly lines in Texas and Nevada because of the incident. Computers, servers, and machinery were impacted, and employees were sent home. Despite the swift identification of the issue and quick fix for the problem, it was the impact and recovery process on the customers’ environments that were disastrous and lengthy. This serves to highlight the risk that automotive manufacturing can face without proper observability in place. Click the link to read 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eB8934p2 #DWMagazine #digitalisationworld

✨ Feature story of the week from #DigitalisationWorldMagazine - Issue 2! 'What’s observability? And why should I care if I’ve got AI?' by Sammy Zoghlami, Nutanix Technology was supposed to make everything easier. Faster decisions, smarter systems, leaner operations. But for many leaders, the reality looks very different: rising costs, swelling cyber risk, and a tangle of legacy and multi-cloud complexity that’s only getting harder to manage. AI is now promising to help solve this — but in truth, AI has its work cut out. Read below or click the link 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gihgc8a8 #DWMagazine #DigitalisationWorld #AI

💡Expert opinions: ‘Why CISOs need to rethink security metrics and move beyond scan counts’ by Sohail Iqbal, CISO at Veracode Cybersecurity leaders are facing a measurement problem. While threats continue to escalate, many organisations are still relying on outdated indicators to assess how well they’re protected. Meanwhile, according to our research, half of organisations are carrying critical security debt (vulnerabilities that have been left unresolved for longer than a year), which creates persistent exposure that attackers are quick to exploit. 💡Expert opinions: ‘Biometrics in the age of AI: Can zero-knowledge restore trust?’ by Paul Inglis, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Ping Identity. Deepfakes and AI-driven tactics are reshaping the fraud landscape, enabling attackers to spoof identities with terrifying efficiency. As biometric data becomes central to seamless digital identity, it has also become a premier target. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre is now prioritising deepfake threats, reflecting a reality where traditional biometric systems are no longer the unhackable fortresses they once were. 💡Expert opinions: ‘Europe needs to stop building regulatory moats, and start building markets instead’ by Daniele Viappiani, Economics and venture capital advisor with GC1 Ventures. Faced with legitimate concerns about dependence on foreign cloud and AI infrastructure, European policymakers have reached for the tools they know best: regulation, certification and the promotion of national champions. This approach is understandable, the execution, however, is likely to cause more problems than it can solve. European policy thinking has gradually moved thought three tiers of sovereignty. The first is data sovereignty, i.e. where servers sit and where data is stored, the second is operational sovereignty, concerning who controls encryption, patching and personnel access, while the third and most demanding one is legal and strategic sovereignty: which jurisdiction’s law applies and where foreign governments can compel disclosure. 💡Expert opinions: ‘The Blurring Lines of Trust: Rethinking Third-Party Risk for Organisational Resilience’ by Tony Fergusson, CISO in Residence at Zscaler. The traditional security perimeter no longer exists. Today’s enterprises operate within sprawling ecosystems of suppliers, SaaS platforms, contractors, and outsourced partners - and that interdependence is becoming one of the greatest threats to organisational resilience. According to a recent report Zscaler commissioned, titled The Ripple Effect: A Hallmark of Cybersecurity, 68% of IT leaders say their organisations rely on contractors and third parties more than ever before, yet fewer than half have implemented sufficient third-party risk controls. The gap between reliance and readiness is no longer theoretical: 60% of organisations report they have already experienced a significant failure caused by a supplier or third-party vendor in the past year, and 63% expect another such incident within the next 12 months. 💡Expert opinions: ‘Why some data centres deteriorate faster than others’ by Glyn Hodgkiss, Air Quality Associate, Cundall A data centre can appear fully operational right up until the moment it is not. Cooling systems may be running, power supplies stable, and the monitoring dashboards normal. Yet, across the data centre, degradation may already be underway. The cause might not be mechanical failure or electrical overload, but in fact, corrosion. Data centres are designed around tightly regulated environments. Factors like temperature, humidity, airflow, and power demand are carefully managed. However, the quality of the air itself is not always examined with the same scrutiny. Airborne pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, acidic aerosols, and hydrogen sulphide, combined with humidity, salinity, and dust particles, can accelerate the corrosion of sensitive components.
