“Own the Impact” is our International Women's Day theme this year, reminding us that progress happens when we use our voices, claim space, drive outcomes, and contribute to one another’s growth. When women share knowledge, mentor others, advocate for fairness, create visibility, invest time, or build new ideas - they don’t just advance individually. They strengthen entire systems, industries, and communities. Many technologies we use today exist because women created them or made breakthroughs behind them! 💻The first published algorithm intended for a computing machine was written by Ada Lovelace in 1843, widely regarded as the first published computer program. 🚀Apollo’s onboard flight software for the Apollo missions, including the system that kept critical functions running during the Apollo 11 computer overload alarms, was led by Margaret Hamilton at MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory. 🧮The A-0 System, one of the earliest compiler-related systems that translated symbolic mathematical code into machine code, was developed by Grace Hopper in 1952, laying out the groundwork for modern programming languages. 🌐The Spanning Tree Protocol, a networking protocol that prevents loops and enables reliable data flow across Ethernet networks, was invented by Radia Perlman in 1985. 🎨The original icons and visual interface elements of the Apple Macintosh in 1980s were designed by Susan Kare, helping establish the visual language of modern graphical user interfaces. 🧬The discovery of transposable DNA elements (“jumping genes”) was made by Barbara McClintock, transforming scientific understanding of how genes move and regulate genetic change. 📡A patented frequency-hopping communication system (1942) - an early form of spread-spectrum technology - was co-invented by Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil, influencing later wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Each of them gave their knowledge, creativity, courage, and persistence - not as “first women to,” but as original inventors and discoverers. They shaped how we live and work today.
