As temperatures rise across the UK this week, it’s easy to focus on the brighter side of summer. But for many, heatwaves can prove to be difficult. Recent analysis suggests that around 570 excess deaths can occur during a short UK heatwave, with the vast majority among people aged 65+. Last summer alone saw over 1,300 heat-associated deaths across just four heat episodes in England. Behind these numbers is a very real and growing pressure on NHS services from increased emergency admissions to the strain placed on already stretched clinical teams. And this is where data matters. At Cybit, we’ve seen first-hand how better use of data and analytics can help healthcare providers, anticipate demand, prioritise care more effectively and ultimately reduce waiting times for patients who need support most. It’s not about technology for technology’s sake, it’s about using insight to protect the most vulnerable when the system is under stress. A small human reminder as well: Heat doesn’t just impact people. Every year, the RSPCA receives hundreds of reports of animals suffering in hot weather, often due to preventable factors like overheating in cars or over-exercise. If it’s too hot for you, it’s likely too hot for them. Shade, water, and timing walks thoughtfully can make all the difference. As we experience more frequent extreme weather in the UK, the intersection between climate, health, and data is becoming impossible to ignore.
