Why are LEDs so ridiculously efficient compared to old light bulbs? Because they quietly fixed the biggest design flaw in lighting history… accidentally turning most of your electricity into heat 🔥 In this video, we break down how incandescent bulbs work by heating a wire until it glows (and wastes most of the energy doing it), while LEDs take a far smarter approach: using semiconductors to generate light directly when electrons change energy states. No overheating. No wasted energy. Just light. That simple shift is why LEDs: 💡 Stay cool to the touch. 💡 Last for tens of thousands of hours. 💡 Use dramatically less power. 💡 Power everything from phones and TVs to streetlights and Christmas decorations. We even revisit the slightly chaotic world of 1980s Christmas lights… where one dead bulb could take down the entire tree and possibly your festive spirit with it. Today, LEDs are everywhere not because they’re trendy, but because they’re fundamentally better engineering. Once you see how inefficient old lighting really was, it’s hard to unsee it. 🎥 Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/ef89rg8U #TeamCompSci #CraignDave #ComputerScience #STEMEducation #PhysicsExplained #LED #Technology #EdTech #Engineering #ScienceCommunication

What is the best material to make a smartphone from? The honest answer: there isn’t one. In our latest Lesson Hacker video, we explore why modern smartphones are not built from a single “ideal” material, but instead from a carefully engineered combination of plastics, metals, glass, and ceramics — each chosen for very specific trade-offs. Plastic offers durability and impact resistance but lacks a premium feel. Aluminium provides strength and heat dissipation but can interfere with signals. Glass enables wireless charging and a high-end finish but is notoriously fragile. Ceramics bring exceptional hardness and radio transparency but are expensive and difficult to manufacture at scale. The result? Your smartphone is essentially a layered compromise — designed to balance performance, cost, durability, and aesthetics. It’s not about finding the perfect material, but the least-worst combination that works in the real world. 🎥 Watch the full breakdown here: https://lnkd.in/esWVS3F2 #TeamCompSci #CraignDave #ComputerScienceEducation #Engineering #MaterialsScience #STEMEducation #EdTech #Technology #Smartphones
