About us

ALTER is an international architecture practice based in the United Kingdom. We are architects, committed to producing sensitive and responsive ventures. We produce highly-crafted and conceptually clear buildings as an urge to react to the surrounding physical environments we as human beings inhabit. As a practice we look for progressive clients with an equal passion for design, architecture and the environment. Aesthetics, innovation, and constant curiosity are what drives us to make our clients ideas real. Our work is deeply connected to the landscapes we live in - from the hills of Sussex to the shores of Cornwall. We embrace each new project as an opportunity to draw on our multidisciplinary experiences - looking holistically between person, space, and place, and interpret this into strategic thinking for an architectural solution.

  • Revisiting a previous project of ours, this scheme comprises the development of seventeen terraced dwellings in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Following an extended and iterative planning process, the proposal successfully secured full planning consent. The design establishes a contemporary architectural language that responds sensitively to the existing urban context, contributing a coherent yet distinctive addition to the local streetscape. The scheme is underpinned by a people-focused design strategy, prioritising spatial connectivity and social interaction. The layout is carefully configured to encourage resident engagement while reinforcing visual and physical connections to the surrounding landscape. The accompanying masterplan drawing illustrates the overall site arrangement, spatial hierarchy, and outward-facing relationships that define the development’s character and outlook. #alter_uk #architecture #residentialarchitecture #eastbourne #sussex #planningapproved #newhomes #propertydevelopment #realestate #archilovers #design #newbuild

  • Most £50k extensions don’t add £50k of value. At Alter Architects, we see it time and again — more space treated as the default solution, rather than the right one. Extensions are priced per square metre. Value isn’t. If the underlying design isn’t working, adding floor area doesn’t solve the problem — it amplifies it. Inefficient layouts. Poor circulation. Rooms that lack connection. Dead space. Underwhelming façades. Light treated as an afterthought. Build on top of that, and the return reflects it. A £3–5k design review at the outset will often deliver more value than a £50k extension without a clear strategy. Because it forces better questions: - Is more space actually needed? - What is genuinely limiting the property’s value? - Where are the highest-impact changes? In many cases, it’s not about adding — it’s about rethinking. Reconfiguring layouts. Improving natural light. Refining material quality. These are the moves that change how a home is experienced — and valued. Once construction begins, flexibility disappears and costs rise. By then, most of the critical decisions have already been made. The real leverage comes much earlier than most people think. #AlterArchitects #DesignStrategy #PropertyDevelopment #ResidentialArchitecture #Renovation #PreConstruction

  • A scheme that once tested the limits of the planning process now stands as a marker of change in Eastbourne’s residential landscape. This collection of seventeen terraced houses, designed by Alter Architects, challenged local expectations at the time — not through scale, but through attitude. Its contemporary form and material language signalled a deliberate move away from the familiar, proposing a different way of shaping new housing in East Sussex. Beyond its outward appearance, the project places everyday living at the forefront. Spaces are arranged to draw in light, frame views, and quietly encourage interaction — both within the home and across the terrace. What emerged is not just a row of houses, but a considered piece of town-making that adds a new layer to the character of the area. #alter_uk #architecture #residentialarchitecture #eastbourne #sussex #planningapproved #newhomes #propertydevelopment #realestate #archilovers #design #newbuild

  • Revisiting a past project: a design for seventeen terraced homes in Eastbourne, created by Alter Architects. The development in Eastbourne, East Sussex was granted planning consent after a long and challenging journey. The proposal set out a contemporary vision for 17 terraced houses, introducing a fresh architectural language to the area at the time. Designed with a strong focus on people, the scheme aimed to create homes that encourage connection — both to nature and between residents — while offering a thoughtful, modern addition to the East Sussex streetscape. #alter_uk #architecture #residentialarchitecture #eastbourne #sussex #planningapproved #newhomes #propertydevelopment #realestate #archilovers #design #newbuild

At Alter Architects, we’re very happy to share that we’ve been shortlisted for the Phoenix Art Space redevelopment — an exciting opportunity to reimagine this important cultural building for the future. Our vision is to transform the Phoenix Art Space façade into a high-performing, future-ready asset, introducing a state-of-the-art ventilated second-skin façade system enhanced with advanced insulation technologies to deliver outstanding thermal performance, airtightness, and energy efficiency. This proposal goes far beyond aesthetic renewal. It’s a targeted sustainability strategy—designed to reduce operational energy use, minimise heat loss through winter, and manage solar gains in summer. The result is a building that operates more efficiently year-round, balancing comfort, resilience, and sustainability. By combining responsibly sourced materials with passive design principles that lessen dependence on mechanical systems, the new façade both reduces carbon emissions and extends the building’s lifecycle. The renewed Phoenix Art Space façade will serve as a protective envelope and a lasting investment in environmental performance and design excellence. #AlterArchitects #PhoenixArtSpace #SustainableArchitecture #BuildingEnvelope #FaçadeDesign #EnergyEfficiency #LowCarbonDesign #ArchitecturalInnovation #PassiveDesign #FutureReadyBuildings #SustainabilityInArchitecture #NetZeroDesign #DesignForResilience #CircularArchitecture #ArchitectsUK #ArtsRegeneration #BrightonArchitecture

A new kind of woodland hideaway is coming. At Alter Architects we’re developing a mirrored forest cabin that quietly disappears into the landscape while offering a warm, timber-lined retreat within. Rain traces across the glass, trees are reflected on every surface, and a simple, compact plan creates a place to read, sleep, or work immersed in the woods. This prototype explores: Low‑impact foundations that touch the ground lightly Highly insulated, timber interiors behind reflective glazing A modular form that can be configured for solitary cabins, writer’s studios or off‑grid guest suites We’re refining the design now and looking for collaborators, makers and sites interested in testing this next evolution of our cabin work. If that sounds like you, we’d love to talk.  #AlterArchitects #CabinDesign #ForestCabin #MirroredCabin #WoodlandRetreat #ArchitecturalCabin #ModularArchitecture #OffGridLiving #SmallSpaces #ContemporaryArchitecture #SustainableDesign #TimberArchitecture #UKArchitecture #DesignInNature #LandscapeDrivenDesign

  • Stanford Villa redefines a once‑redundant Sussex building as a landmark of contemporary coastal architecture house. Situated in Hove, where the elegance of Regency heritage meets the calm of the sea, the project exemplifies a carefully crafted process of adaptive reuse—transforming an underused structure into a bright, sustainable home for modern living. Our design process began with hand‑drawn explorations of light, views, and the client’s way of life. These sketches evolved into a design language centred on natural light, spatial fluidity, and material honesty. Through considered interventions, the former structure was reshaped rather than replaced—preserving embodied energy while opening interiors to garden and horizon. The result is a home that feels both grounded in context and refreshingly contemporary. As a heritage‑sensitive renovation, Stanford Villa demanded measured responses to local planning and conservation frameworks. Working alongside Colm Mckee MRTPI of CMK Planning, we navigated these requirements with precision and care. Ivan Jones captured the project’s layered story through photography—tracing its transformation from disuse to design clarity. Every decision embodied the spirit of human‑centred, environmentally responsible design. Reconfigured openings draw daylight deep inside, tactile surfaces celebrate craftsmanship, and efficient building systems secure the home’s longevity. This project stands as a testament to how adaptation can create renewal—breathing new life into the familiar through architecture that honours both past and present. • At Alter, hand drawing remains at the very heart of our architectural design process. Every project begins in the sketchbook, where a single pencil line captures the client brief, site context, and overarching concept design long before work shifts into digital architecture tools. We rely on hand-drawn plans, sections, and diagrams to investigate natural light, views, circulation, privacy, and spatial flow with immediacy and nuance. This analogue stage underpins concept development, rapid option testing, and collaborative design workshops with clients and consultants. On site, we sketch sun paths, topography, existing structures, and coastal or urban context, ensuring each project responds accurately to its surroundings and is truly site-responsive and rooted in place-based design. Back in the studio, layers of tracing paper enable swift design iteration, proportion studies, and massing explorations before committing to computer information. As projects progress into computer modelling, planning drawings, and technical detailing, those original hand sketches continue to act as the principal reference, protecting design intent, sustainability objectives, and the intended user experience. For us, beginning by hand means human-centred design, context-led architecture, and spaces that feel authentic, tactile, and profoundly connected to the way people actually live and work. #AlterArchitects #ArchitectsInCornwall #ArchitectsInSussex #Architecture #DesignProcess #HandDrawing #SketchToStructure #ResidentialArchitecture #ContemporaryArchitecture #CoastalArchitecture #SustainableDesign #HumanCentredDesign #ContextDrivenDesign #UKArchitecture

  • Contemporary House Renovation: Scandinavian Power – Cornwall Luxury A Study in Sensory Design We’re proud to share Scandinavian Power – Cornwall Luxury, a project that reimagines traditional Cornish architecture through a contemporary lens. This renovation is a study in how Scandinavian simplicity and Cornwall’s elemental beauty can create a home that feels both grounded and elevated — a sensory experience shaped by light, texture, and nature itself. Our approach respected the Cornish context — its granite cliffs, shifting sea light, and coastal rhythm — while introducing a minimalist design language that celebrates material honesty and sustainable comfort. Every detail, from the window framing Atlantic views to the tactile surfaces within, was crafted to connect interior serenity with exterior vitality. Please check out our website to read the full article and explore the project in more detail. www.alterarchitects.co.uk For those exploring #ArchitectsInCornwall or seeking a benchmark in #ContemporaryDesign and #SustainableLuxury, this project exemplifies what it means to live beautifully within place and nature. #AlterArchitect #CornwallLuxury #ScandinavianDesign #ContemporaryArchitecture #CornwallHomes #CoastalArchitecture #SustainableDesign #DesignInCornwall #ModernLiving #ArchitecturalExcellence
