Hyperscalers such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI dominate headlines about new data center construction, building or contracting for campuses up to 1 GW to run AI workloads. But the rest of the business world—the likes of airlines, banks, hospitals, or carmakers—still depends on data centers to run day-to-day operations. These enterprises also need new capacity to train and run new AI capabilities. And the scramble for data center space has made finding the necessary capacity and equipment more difficult for them. “I think we'll see more inferencing at the edge. I think that's going to be the big push,” said Lawson-Shanks. “However that comes to be, whether it's refitting existing, legacy style buildings if that's possible for them, or containerized infrastructure closely adjacent. I also think we'll have more composable — I'm using that term from the software world — composable data centers … [with] the ability to have the building flex based on its workload.” Read more in this week's newsletter #datacenterworld #datacenterworldinsider #datacenternews

“It never crossed my mind to work in corporate IT. And while I knew what a data center was of course, I really had no understanding of what it took to build a data center and certainly no understanding of the business side of building and operating data centers,” says Joseph Kava. “But I took a leap of faith and worked in the IT department and for two years learned everything I could about the whole IT stack, including data centers.” Read more in this week's newsletter. #datacenternews #datacenterworld #datacenterworld2026

News from #DataCenterWorld by Chris Murphy about Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Joseph Kava
Joe Kava was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Data Center World this week, recognizing his 17 years leading data center development at Google. Joe’s work helped define what we know today as hyperscale data centers, including setting new standards for sustainability. In accepting his award, here’s what Joe had to say to the next generation of leaders in the data center industry: "We have the opportunity to change the way data centers interact with the [electrical] grid and help solve the energy crisis. So, as I look at the younger leaders in the industry today, my advice is this: Don’t build for capacity, build for legacy. Build the data centers and systems that are as sustainable as they are powerful. The last 20 years have been an incredible ride, but I truly believe the most innovative days for the data center industry are still ahead of us.” I was fortunate to interview Joe, and he reflected on some key moments and lessons from his career, including the mid-career leap of faith he took that would eventually lead him to his success at Google. https://lnkd.in/gV2iq5BX Bill Kleyman Tara Gibb Allison Watson
