🔬 New soil test launched for assessing Fusarium Basal Rot risk in onions 🧅 Fusarium Basal Rot is an untreatable disease that costs the UK onion industry approx. £10 million a year. Its cause is the soil pathogen 𝘍𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮 𝘧. 𝘴𝘱. 𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘦 (FOC). Under the Innovate UK and Defra-funded FUSED project, bioscientists John Clarkson and Sascha Jenkins at the University of Warwick developed a DNA-based diagnostic test sensitive enough to detect FOC in soil samples. ADAS's role in the FUSED project is to now offer this test commercially to growers, agronomists, and their advisors. Dr Ben Maddison, Managing Director of ADAS Biotechnology, said: “We encourage all growers in doubt to get in touch with us and book soil testing via the ADAS website to avoid a potentially very costly problem later. Unfortunately, Fusarium Basal Rot remains untreatable for now, but it is no longer unavoidable.” Read more in our latest news https://lnkd.in/eBtqW2Vg #onions #soiltesting #alliums

💧 An excellent write-up in the latest Farmers Weekly about our client Duncan Ellis of Church Farm, who has been trialling a remote water metering system across his 1,200ha farm to monitor his water use and identify leaks via a phone app 🚰📱 This South East Water-funded trial was initiated by ADAS Principal Consultant Tom Brassington, who wanted to help his farm clients address unreliable meter readings and high water costs. The solution we trialled with Duncan was a Spherag System from Wroot Water Limited. The trial proved that this remote water metering system: 🏡 Is suitable for a large or remote farm operation ☀️ Can be powered by solar PV panels and does not require access to mains electricity 📱 Works reliably in areas with poor phone signal Tom said: “On two other occasions, the technology allowed us to identify a burst pipe very soon after it happened, so the water loss was minimal." "For farms that spend thousands on utility water bills each year, this technology will help identify unusually high overconsumption. It may spur on other ideas on how to use water more efficiently to bring bills down further.” Read the full story ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eqRU337n #water #wateruse #waterconsumption #sustainablefarming

Meet Molly! 👋 "Hi Everyone! I’m Molly, an Ecological Consultant in the Avonmouth office. I started working at ADAS five years ago as a Seasonal Consultant as my first foray into ecological consultancy and haven’t left since. My role involves undertaking habitat and species surveys to consult on proposed development/utility works, ensuring appropriate avoidance, mitigation, compensation and enhancement for the species found on site. I have chosen specialties in birds and botany, and have especially enjoyed the site work I’ve been involved with in the Welsh hills and moorlands around the UK.   I’ve always wanted to work with the natural world, studying Biology and then Ecology and Conservation at University (Reading then Cardiff) while taking time in between to gain hands-on volunteering experience at various places across the UK (Exminster Marshes, Skomer, Orkney). In ecological consultancy, I’ve found the mix of outdoor survey and desk-based assessments the perfect variety for me.   Another highlight of the job is working with my amazing colleagues within my own team and others, who are always friendly, supportive, and inspiring in their knowledge and enthusiasm for various aspects of ecology.   Outside of work I am a keen reader, gardener and music listener. I am also attempted to become more DIY savvy, but I’ve got a way to go!" #ecologist #botany #conservation

Welcome to the team Adam! ⭐ "Hello! I’m Adam and I am the most recent addition to the Romsey Office at ADAS where I started this May as an Archaeological Supervisor. I am just getting to grips with the systems at ADAS, but I am really looking forward to supporting and leading some of the team – also getting the chance for more experience report writing is a big plus. I started fresh (and lost) out of University as a Trainee at Cotswold Archaeology and have been in the field for over 3 and a half years now so feel ready to take on some new challenges. Personally, I have always enjoyed learning about both Human Origins and Mythology, so those are easy ways to get me invested. However, outside of Archaeology, I always get excited learning new board games, catching up with friends and watching horror films – even the cheesy ones."
