This March, I have been reminded that we gain the most when we give with intention. By contributing to the Wikipedia campaign through writing and translating profiles of African womn like Maha Jouini (https://lnkd.in/d_-2E5zw) and Josephine Ahikire (https://lnkd.in/d3x8PdsV) into Rukiga, I am not just sharing knowledge, I am reclaiming our stories, our languages, and our visibility. By organising local IWD activities with fellow Wikimedians and strengthening the skills of young female editors, I am investing in a new generation that will write Africa into the world on its own terms. And by sharing feminist insights at CSW70 and in national dialogues on access to justice and TFGBV, I am giving voice to the systemic barriers that womn face, so that together we can shape a more just, connected, and dignified future. In giving time, voice, knowledge, solidarity. I continue to gain purpose, community, and renewed commitment to the work ahead. #GivetoGain #Womensmonth2026 #March2026

Uganda’s Constitutional Court has delivered a major ruling that has outlawed several sections of the Computer Misuse Act, Cap 96, and ordered the government and its agencies to stop any further enforcement of the nullified provisions. We welcome the Constitutional Court’s progressive ruling, a critical step toward strengthening legislative accountability and reaffirming Uganda’s human rights commitments. As a co-petitioner, we have consistently maintained that while addressing cybercrime is necessary, overly broad laws risk shrinking the digital civic space by limiting freedom of expression and access to information. This moment must not breed complacency. Without decisive implementation of the Court’s orders and sustained vigilance, restrictive provisions risk re emerging under different laws and guises. Protecting fundamental freedoms is not optional, it is a constitutional imperative. Are we fighting modern illicit finance with outdated tools? Our new article argues that AML/CTF’s heavy focus on traditional banking is increasingly misaligned with a world of fintech, instant payments, and crypto-enabled typologies. At the East African Data Conference, we hosted a workshop on “When Data Harms Defenders: Rebuilding Accountability in East Africa’s Data Systems” led by Noelyn Nassuuna. The session brought together civil society actors, researchers, and governance experts to reflect on the growing digital risks faced by activists and human rights defenders across the region. As conversations unfolded, participants highlighted the urgent need for stronger collaboration and preparedness, especially as several countries in the region move toward upcoming elections. A key recommendation emerging from the discussion was the formation of a regional consortium that can help civil society organizations coordinate, strengthen digital safety, and prepare for the risks that defenders may face during electoral periods. These conversations reaffirm the importance of building accountable data systems that protect, rather than expose those defending rights and democracy. #DataGovernance #DigitalRights #HumanRightsDefenders #EastAfrica #DataAccountability

This International Women's Day, I had the honor of spending time with an inspiring group of women during a live audience podcast hosted by Defenders Protection Initiative under the theme “Give to Gain: Safe Communities for Women.” The theme was a powerful reminder that safe communities do not happen by accident—they are built intentionally when individuals, institutions, and communities choose to contribute something meaningful toward making them possible. Our discussion explored how we can make both online and offline spaces safer for women and girls. We reflected on the gaps that still exist between the law and real protection, the growing challenge of technology-facilitated violence, and the critical role that law, policy, and digital rights advocacy play in addressing these issues. A key takeaway was the importance of collective responsibility—governments, technology platforms, civil society, and communities all have a role to play in building safer and more inclusive environments. I am grateful to the Defenders Protection Initiative for the invitation and for creating this important platform for dialogue. It was also a pleasure sharing the space with Ruth Atim, Noelyn Nassuuna, and Mutyaba Gloria, whose insights and perspectives enriched the conversation. Conversations like these remind us that when we invest in women’s safety, dignity, and empowerment, we are ultimately strengthening our entire society. #InternationalWomensDay #GiveToGain #WomenSafety #DigitalRights #HumanRights #SafeCommunities African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) Womankind Worldwide Paradigm Initiative Women of Uganda Network Association for Progressive Communications Access Now FEMTECH LAW INITIATIVE

The session, 'When Data Harms Defenders: Rebuilding Accountability in East Africa’s Data Systems' led by the Defenders Protection Initiative, explores how data systems, when weakly governed or insufficiently safeguarded, can expose human rights defenders and civic actors to significant harm. Data can also be weaponized through surveillance, profiling, and the misuse of personal information. Drawing on insights from the Toolkit for Activists and Defenders, the session examines practical approaches to rebuilding trust and accountability in data governance systems, particularly in contexts where civic space is shrinking and digital tools are increasingly used to monitor, intimidate, or silence dissent. As Noelyn Nassuuna reflects: “During the recently concluded elections in Uganda, many activists and human rights defenders were arrested and detained largely because of information that had been collected and shared about them. This raises a critical question: how safe is our data as human rights defenders, and how safely do we handle the data entrusted to us by the communities we work with?” The Open Institute Office of the Data Protection Commissioner #EADataGov26 #DataProtectionKE

I spent Women’s Day on the couch shooting a live podcast episode of Defenders Protection Initiative dubbed #DefendersUnplugged. Together with Yasmine Ahmed from #FemTechLaw, and Gloria, we unpacked how law, technology, and strong community solidarity can work together to create safer spaces for women. Because the truth is, safe communities don’t happen, but are built, through action, collaboration, and commitment. I can’t wait for you to watch this podcast. #WomensDay2026 #GiveToGain
