On May 11–12, Yuliya Sporysh, director of the NGO Girls participated in the Europe and Central Asia Care Forum — a platform dedicated to the development of gender-sensitive and human rights-based care systems — in Istanbul. The forum was organized by the UN Women Regional Office and aimed to facilitate the transition from fragmented social services to a comprehensive care economy, which is intended to promote women’s economic empowerment, create decent working conditions, and foster inclusive economic development in the region. The event was attended by representatives of governments, international financial institutions, the academic community, trade unions, civil society, the private sector, and UN agencies from countries in Europe, Central Asia, and Turkey. One of the key topics was women’s unpaid care work and its impact on the economy and society. Participants emphasized that care work includes not only childcare but also support for the elderly, people with disabilities, sick family members, and others who require constant assistance. The forum discussed how it is women who most often perform this work without pay, which limits their opportunities for professional development, economic independence, and participation in the labor market. The issue of paternity leave was also raised as one of the tools for a more equitable distribution of caregiving responsibilities. It was specifically emphasized that due to the invisibility and undervaluation of care work, national economies lose significant resources and potential every year. That is why forum participants called for the integration of care policies into national planning and budgeting. Yulia Sporysh: “The forum was an important step in bringing the topic of care work out of the ‘shadows’ and into the realm of public policy and regional cooperation. The NGO Girls confirmed its readiness to contribute to the development of this topic in Ukraine and to promote systemic solutions in the care economy.”

How can we make conversations about online safety with youth truly effective? Within the E-mpowerYouth project, we work at the intersection of research and practice. Our latest article brings together key insights on: ▪ the most common forms of online violence ▪ why adolescents are particularly vulnerable ▪ how war and forced displacement increase these risks ▪ the need for coordinated, multi-sectoral responses 📖 Read the full article: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTsh2Y3m Building on these insights, we are now launching the piloting phase of educational materials and approaches aimed at: ▪ strengthening safe online interaction skills ▪ raising awareness among adolescents and adults ▪ introducing practical prevention tools This marks an important step from understanding the problem to implementing solutions in real-life contexts. #EndViolence #Safetyonline #DigitalSafety #OnlineSafety #DigitalResilience #EmpowerYouth #EmpowerYouthOnline #EYouthproject The #EmpowerYouth project is co-financed by the European Union, implemented by  International Child Development Initiatives (ICDI) Fundacja PRO-FIL OPORA Foundation NGO Girls Labor and Health Social Initiatives (LHSI)

Previously, the NGO Girls had already publicly expressed its position on the draft Civil Code of Ukraine—specifically regarding provisions related to children’s rights and the possibility of marriage from the age of 14. It was precisely this public outcry and active civic engagement that became key factors in the removal of this provision from the draft. We are now presenting a more comprehensive position on the draft law. The current version contains a broader range of risks and requires systematic revision to account for children’s rights, gender equality, and international standards. Experience from the previous stage shows that public outcry has a real impact. We urge you not to stand idly by and to continue defending the rights of children and women.

Over the past few weeks, Director of NGO Girls Dr Yuliya Sporysh, traveled across Kharkiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions — meeting teams on the ground, listening to communities, and seeing firsthand what it takes to deliver support in wartime Ukraine. She visited mobile brigades and safe spaces, spoke directly with local teams and community representatives, and documented real cases and needs. The challenges our teams navigate every day are real: difficult logistics, damaged infrastructure, seasonal access barriers, limited availability of services. Understanding them up close is what makes the difference between support that looks good on paper and support that actually works. "What matters most to me on these visits is a simple question: what do my teams need to stay resourced — so they can keep supporting Ukrainian women living through this war? The answer is never the same twice. And that's exactly why I keep showing up", — Yuliya Sporysh. Fieldwork isn't a formality. It's how we make sure our support actually reaches the people who need it.

“I did not know where to turn, but here I was supported and helped to take the first steps toward a safe life. Now I am recovering after childbirth, enjoying motherhood, and believing that everything will be all right,” shares Maryna (name changed for safety reasons). She is a 34-year-old woman from Donetsk Region who was forced to leave her home settlement because of shelling. After moving to Kryvyi Rih, Maryna was looking for safety and stability. Instead, she found herself facing another danger: her partner systematically subjected her to psychological and physical violence, even during pregnancy. During another incident, Maryna decided to seek help from the Resilience Center. There, she received initial support and was referred to the mobile team of NGO Girls. She was in a vulnerable situation: without a stable income or safe housing, with payments for internally displaced people as her only source of income. The organization’s team — a psychologist, a social worker, and a case manager — acted in a coordinated way: they referred Maryna to partner organizations to receive clothing, footwear, and household items, provided consultations on available social services, and arranged cash assistance so that she could move away from the abuser and rent her own housing. “Thanks to a comprehensive approach and intersectoral coordination, it was possible to ensure Maryna’s safety and help stabilize her life situation,” comments a specialist from NGO Girls. Today, Maryna is living in safe conditions and feels more confident about the future. Assistance is provided within the framework of the project “Strengthening Access and Service Provision for SRH Support and GBV Prevention among Conflict-Affected Women and Girls in Eastern and Southern Ukraine” in cooperation with the international humanitarian organization CARE, with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office. “Alongside the specialists from this organization, I felt genuine women’s support and realized that even in difficult times, it is possible to find inner harmony,” shares 36-year-old Monika. She is married and is raising children together with her husband. Family, support from others, and the opportunity to do something useful for other people are important to Monika. She works as an organizer at the House of Culture, where she actively participates in community life and in organizing cultural events, helps the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and supports volunteer initiatives. But behind all this activity was something Monika rarely spoke about openly: inner doubts, emotional exhaustion, and a feeling that she lacked inner support. After learning about the work of NGO Girls, the woman joined the organization’s initiatives. She attended an art therapy event, where through creativity and direct communication she began to restore her inner balance; she took part in training on preventing gender-based violence; and she completed training on restoring inner harmony. “Working with Monika showed how important support and a safe space are for women, where they can speak openly about their experiences,” notes the specialist. Thanks to the support of NGO Girls, Monika also has the opportunity to work with a psychologist free of charge through online consultations. Psychological support helps her better understand her emotions, work through fears and inner experiences, and restore her inner resources. Today, Monika feels inspired to support other women and share her own experience.
