Women are shaping the energy transition. ⚡️🌏 In our latest CASE blog, Larasati Eka W., Energy Advisor at GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN and Gender Focal Point for the project CASE in #Indonesia, shares her perspectives on integrating gender considerations into the project’s work. Her insights underline the importance of embedding inclusivity in day-to-day activities and decision-making processes, recognising that energy access and use are shaped by different needs and realities. Strengthening gender inclusion is therefore key to ensuring that the energy transition is effective, equitable, and responsive to diverse contexts. 💬 Women are not only beneficiaries of the transition, but also key actors in shaping more inclusive and sustainable energy systems. Read the full interview to explore how gender inclusion can move from principle to practice, and why it is essential for a clean, affordable and secure energy future in #SoutheastAsia: https://lnkd.in/gEwPkfgS Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH #CASEforSEA #WomenInEnergy #GenderEquality #EnergyTransition #SustainableDevelopment #Inclusion

⚡Energy security has returned to the centre of global economic and policy discussions. Recent tensions in the #MiddleEast are creating uncertainty in global energy markets, with implications that extend well beyond the region. For #SoutheastAsia, where many countries depend on imported fuels and maritime supply routes, these developments highlight how closely regional #energy systems remain tied to global geopolitical dynamics. 💡Our latest CASE for Southeast Asia blog, “Tensions in the Middle East: Implications for Southeast Asia,” marks the first article in a new series examining how evolving geopolitical developments are shaping #EnergySecurity and #EnergyTransition pathways across the region. Written by Suchart K., Senior Energy Advisor for the project CASE at GIZ Thailand, the first article explores how disruptions linked to the Strait of #Hormuz, along with wider tensions in the Middle East, are affecting #oil and #LNG markets, and how these pressures may unfold across Southeast Asian economies. 📖 This article series will continue to track emerging developments across oil, gas, and power systems, providing regional perspectives on what these shifts mean for Southeast Asia’s energy security, resilience, and just energy transition. Can emerging technologies fast-track #Indonesia’s journey to #NetZero? ⚡️ To reach our climate goals by 2060, we need more than just traditional renewables. ♻️ The Roles of Technology to Support Net Zero Emission Targets in Indonesia report by #CASEIndonesia explores high-potential solutions that will redefine our power sector. Here’s what you need to know: 🔹#Solar and Wind are just the start: While Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) is key, we need advanced storage and grid flexibility to make them reliable. 🔹The role of Hydrogen & Ammonia: The report looks at how these fuels can help decarbonise heavy industries that are hard to electrify. 🔹#Nuclear remains a major debate: While it offers massive power generation, it requires careful consideration of infrastructure and public policy. 🔹Smart Grids are the backbone: Modernising our grid is essential to manage a complex mix of energy sources and rising demand. As Indonesia’s electricity demand triples by 2045, choosing the right "tech mix" today determines our economic and environmental security tomorrow. 🌱 Read the full analysis to see which technologies will power our future. 📖 https://lnkd.in/gguSwnp9 #NetZero #EnergyInnovation #SmartGrid #GreenHydrogen #Sustainability #IndonesiaEmas2045 #CASEIndonesia Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

💡Dr Supawan Name Saelim, Project Lead for Southeast Asia Energy Policy at Agora Energiewende and a researcher for the project CASE for Southeast Asia, shares her thoughts on recent geopolitical developments and ways forward for Thailand’s energy security: ⚡️Recent geopolitical developments have highlighted that reliance on #NaturalGas for power generation can expose energy systems to risks in both security of supply and price stability. Conflicts in the #MiddleEast have already affected #LNG export infrastructure to Asia, and even if the conflict ends quickly, restoring this infrastructure will take time. This creates an opportunity to reassess long-term energy planning and strengthen the role of #RenewableEnergy sources, particularly solar and wind. At the same time, this geopolitical uncertainty is a critical moment to strengthen #EnergySecurity, manage import risks, and invest in infrastructure, regulations, and market mechanisms that support #Thailand’s future #energy system. 🌱 🔎Learn more in our policy brief Rethinking LNG: Safeguarding Thailand’s Energy Security Amid Heightened Risks 👉 https://lnkd.in/ghjAESQM 📖 And our gas report, Thailand’s Natural Gas Crossroads: Strategic Risk Mitigation for a Carbon-Neutral Era 👉https://lnkd.in/g_WSjhMU . #CASEforSEA #GasAtCrossroad #EnergyTransition #GasTransition #Geopolitics

🌏 Southeast Asia is particularly exposed to the #energysupply disruptions following the escalating conflict in the #MiddleEast. At the same time, the region has substantial potential to scale up renewable energy and build cleaner, more resilient #powersystems – helping shield economies from global instability and price volatility. #Thailand shows both what is at stake and what is possible. As part of our work under CASE for Southeast Asia, we have analysed the country’s growing dependence on liquefied natural gas (#LNG), outlining a pathway to move structurally away from this reliance and towards a renewables-based electricity system. 🔎 Thailand generates around 64% of its electricity from gas, much of it locked in through existing power purchase agreements. As domestic gas resources decline, the country is turning increasingly to LNG imports. The vast majority of these transit the Strait of Hormuz, where around 87% of crude oil and 86% of LNG flows were destined for Asian markets in 2025. 💰 That reliance on imports already came at a cost. After the 2022 fossil energy crisis, Thailand's LNG import bill rose 187% and #electricity tariffs hit a record THB 4.72/kWh (equivalent to USD 0.14), fuelling inflation and squeezing export competitiveness. 📊 Thailand's upcoming Power Development Plan for 2026–2050 comes at a critical juncture. The decisions made now will shape the country’s #energysecurity for decades. Three strategies stand out: ✅ Accelerating #renewables, modernising the grid and improving efficiency to reduce LNG demand and manage a just transition to a more resilient renewable-based electricity system. ✅ More resilient procurement strategies and stronger consumer protections to limit exposure to global LNG volatility. ✅ Aligning LNG infrastructure with the clean energy transition to avoid overcapacity and stranded assets. 📈 Thailand is one of many countries in Southeast Asia navigating this shift. As domestic production falls and demand grows, the region's exposure to volatile global fuel markets deepens. Renewables and #electrification offer a pathway to stabilise costs, reduce import dependence and strengthen long-term energy security. 🔗 Read more in our studies on the energy transition in Southeast Asia through the links in the comment section below.
