19 hours ago comment added quark67 Can you show where is the different (bad) spacing? I have compiled this MWE with This is bad spacing: replaced with This is good spacing: so the 2 lines have the same text. I don't see any difference.

yesterday comment added David Carlisle oh you should have said you have tl2022 (so are missing three years worth of bug fixes)
yesterday comment added John Pardon @DavidCarlisle That's strange, the output on my installation is different in that the "bad" spacing has the two parentheses in the middle almost overlapping, as if there is a \! in between. I have TeX Live 2022.

yesterday comment added cfr spacing looks identical in the two cases.
yesterday comment added David Carlisle you don't say what is bad about the spacing, it looks OK to me? I added an image

yesterday comment added David Carlisle yes but \let doesn't save the original definition so isn't usable for the renewcommand kinds of use that you indicate are the end use case.
yesterday comment added John Pardon @DavidCarlisle I just tried it with \NewCommandCopy in place of \let and the behavior is the same (that is, has the same seemingly incorrect behavior) :/
yesterday comment added David Carlisle \let is generally not usable on latex-defined commands, hence \NewCommandCopy
