Can you show where is the different (bad) spacing? I have compiled this MWE with This is bad spacing: replaced with This is good spacing: so the 2 lines have the same text. I don't see any difference.

@DavidCarlisle That's strange, the output on my installation is different in that the "bad" spacing has the two parentheses in the middle almost overlapping, as if there is a \! in between. I have TeX Live 2022.

yes but \let doesn't save the original definition so isn't usable for the renewcommand kinds of use that you indicate are the end use case.

@DavidCarlisle I just tried it with \NewCommandCopy in place of \let and the behavior is the same (that is, has the same seemingly incorrect behavior) :/

\let is generally not usable on latex-defined commands, hence \NewCommandCopy
