The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been present in Chad since 2009 and works to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration in coordination with the Chadian authorities and local partners. The mission supports the Government of Chad in saving lives and protecting forcibly displaced communities through emergency humanitarian assistance, finding solutions to displacement and promoting the long-term recovery and stability of communities affected by the crisis, and facilitating regular migration channels through policy support and assistance for voluntary return and reintegration.

The Lake Chad Basin stands at a critical crossroads — where climate pressures, displacement and insecurity intersect across borders. IOM and the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen regional cooperation and deliver more coordinated support for stabilization, resilience and human mobility across the Basin. By combining LCBC’s regional leadership with IOM’s operational expertise, this partnership helps scale up solutions that go beyond national boundaries and better support communities most affected by crisis.
